Mixed Media: From Upcycled Monet a la Big Box to repurposed 1930's textbook, lace, stencil + a photo from 2009

 

The background is actually more pink than this, but the photo was taken in the early morning light under a tree, so it didn't pick it up very well.

This year of Art Every Day Month has been my favorite yet. I have incorporated new skills, adapted old ones, and stretched far beyond the artist I once was. I had a surgery in the midst of it and I kept going.

 

Because of the new techniques I am learning I have re-ignited my bug to take photos of unusual sights and very normal sights in different ways. This makes me more happy than I can say with words.

Today's work is perhaps my favorite mixed media work yet. It is small, 5 inches by 5 inches, on a tile that once had a cheapo reprint of Monet's Waterlilies. It was sold at a big box store and landed at my local thrift store where I picked it up for 45 cents.

I started with color - pink and light green and she grew from there. I used a variety of materials: lace, acrylic paint, photo transfer on tissue paper, spray dye, several pages from an old dictionary and a 1930's textbook. I even took a print of a fallen leaf from my beloved magnolia tree AND just to out do myself, tried out one of my new stencils. The pink had taken over most of the color, so I wanted to put in more green. The stencil painting took care of that "need". The photo transfer is a selfie I took in 2009 toward the end of Art Every Day Month. It is still one of my Google ID photos.

Yes, I took selfies long before they were such a big thing and before their name was the word of the year!

I tend to tell myself its not important if I like what I make or not.

Well, this time I am deeply in love with what I created.

This morning I was busily running from one creative task or chore for the majority of the morning.

It came time to check my laundry, which like many older California houses, is in my detached garage. I opened my back door and heard applause and bells and wondered “What have I done? Does merely opening the door bring a celebration of my presence?”

Yes, I know. This is a rather ridiculous train of thought. There were no people in my yard. There was no audience ready to shower me with praise for doing my laundry.

It was the autumn leaves falling from the linden tree. They fluttered in the air and did a sort of body slam against one another and this created a sound like applause. I listened more deeply. The dryer was humming, the clothes were on spin cycle and a mockingbird called out as if to say, “Don’t worry, the same thing happens to me all the time.”

I laughed aloud and shut my door, facing several of my stacked up indoor duties.

I thought to myself, “This is how to come to know what a passionate life feels like. When I am able to be doing chores and come along to hear applause and stop, just long enough, to listen, to smile, to converse with the mockingbird. This is one of the ways a passionate life consistently shows up: embracing the unexpected, noticing the tiny details our senses pick up can provide us with endless entertainment if we are simply awake and alert enough to notice it.

Simply because you are busy doesn’t mean you have to run around with your mind racing and your pulse quickening and your voice mumbling off your to-do list litany of what you have not yet done.

Make the mundane your playground.

Perhaps you will the next one receiving thunderous applause and hearing raucous bells just because you opened a door and entered a room.

The most helpful strategy is to read the quote, questions, prompt and list and not to "take them on" all at once, but to allow them to simmer in the back of your mind throughout the day. Sure, you may "write" one immediately, but don't call it "done" until you have allowed your powerful subconscious mind to bring up some unexpected responses for your conscious mind to create within.

Lists:

Make a list of five things you have lost, including anything that is currently missing.
