This Week I Learned....

It actually felt like a  bigger break through than it might have been, but it was a breakthrough nonetheless.

I realized I no longer enjoy running from one thing to the next. I don’t like stretching myself because two different friends or friendgroups want me at their event or somehow I feel obligated by association to show up. So in the old days, I would spend an hour here, an hour there with maybe a twenty drive in between… constantly feeling like I was leaving when it was getting good or arriving when things were winding down…. I sometimes felt that marvelous belle of the ball feeling, but mostly I went home feeling completely spent emotionally and not in a good way.

I was worried a bit because I didn’t want to accept invitations and there were days I just wanted to stay home and create, to work on my body of work, to see what would come next when I tried a or a and b or a and c.

When I had my a-ha I realized all of this comes under the category “self care”. I am not losing my grip, I am not “isolating myself” or “being a hermit” I am following the call of my heart instead of the call of obligation.

This week I learned I am pretty content right now.

This week I learned there isn’t too much missing in my life or voids that need filling.

This week I learned I can gather myself in a warm quilt, sit in silence and watch the leaves blowing in the wind outside my window and just rest there without calling it “lazy”.

I knew these things before, but it was like I learned them all over again this week.

Three Gulps of Coffee, My Keyboard and Me -

 

Before I even got up after my lovely, nine hours of sleep I was wondering what I would write for Jana's Thinking Place and her Stream of Consciousness Sunday. This wondering was promptly followed by me scolding myself for even thinking about such a thing, I needed to wait and be surprised and let the five minutes of writing slowly woo me. That's exactly what I did. Also, for those who are unfamiliar with the term "WASPy" - the capital letters stand for White Anglo Saxon Protestant which basically means someone who has that ethnic identity as well as a certain expectation like my family has that you don't call anyone before 9 am and after 9 pm a rule I still follow. You know, sort of uptight, sort of proper, sort of worried about offending others way too much of the time. There. I think we're all ready for my SOC Sunday post, right?

PS- Thank you Jana. I know this was a toughweek. I'm grateful for all you do and the wonderful woman you are!

There is nothing like the first gulp of coffee at my desk early in the morning.

I dreamt of houses last night, or rather, a house I was apparently moving into.

I remember a very cold kitchen and a lovely blue room – sort of a cross between my today living room and the room I had attached to my bedroom at 56 Hawthorne Avenue in Glen Ridge, New Jersey: we called it “The Doll Room”. It is actually the closest thing I had as Virginia Woolf’s suggested space, a room of my own.

I watched “Love it or List it” last night right before sleep. This and my reflections on mortality and life in general must be what ignited this series of images.

The second gulp of coffee, nearly as good as a first.

I’ve been sick much of this week. My first tactic was to charge forward anyway. This is an age old strategy, a good WASPy thing to do. Friday, I surrendered to it in the afternoon after a morning filled with running around and a meeting I would rather have avoided than attended. Remember above, the good WASPy thing is to show up. I got home worse than when the day started. Saturday was primarily a repeat of Friday but good news: I woke up today and my voice is almost normal.

Third big, lavish, languid gulp of coffee: much more contemplative than the first two.

I hear my time is up.

I don’t want to stop.

I don’t want to stop drinking coffee and leisurely writing because the time is up.

Alas, I will, because it is the good WASPy thing to do.

Freedom in Freewriting: Scribing Any Old Word That Pops Onto the Page

Its my first week back with Stream of Consciousness Sunday - and wow, am I glad to be here. Our fearless and delightfully glorious leader, Jana at Jana'sThinkingPlace.com gave us permission today to just burp out a language rich brain dump so that, my loves, is what I did. The surprise is... it was not only entertaining to write, I engaged some ideas I hadn't thought up before that may turn into blog posts or something later. You simply must love when this happens!

I just had a lovely breakfast with a dear friend of mine who has been gone from the Bakersfield area for what, two years now? I am sad to say I don’t remember clearly, but I do remember I want to honor that complete visit with a more organized post than this brain dump brewing through my fingers.

There is football on in the background, as there was for Jana, but it annoys the hell out of me. I have no clue about football season this year and I just don’t care for the most part. I am one of those people who goes to Super Bowl parties simply for the camaraderie. I know enough about football to be able to follow the game, but I’m just not into it. Sorry, Family of Origin and your obsession with the New York Giants.

Its like how I broke up with the LA Dodgers after they were sold by the O’Malley family to a media conglomerate. To me they just weren’t the Dodgers anymore. The whole Dodger Blue culture changed for me. I no longer know anything about baseball. I think the World Series is coming, but shouldn’t that have happened by now? I mean, aren’t baseball players sometimes called “The Boys of Summer?”

I should through in some sexism talk here since all the sports I am talking about not caring about are “men’s” sports.

I might actually do a weekly Women’s Volleyball watching event with friends if there was such a thing, and there very well may be. I just don’t know because the dollar follows the popularity and I’m too busy doing artsy stuff to look up ESPN’s schedule. I should check the schedule for my local colleges, though, and watch Volleyball even though I don’t have a friend on the team simply because I have liked it ever since I moved to California and actually learned some technique. What else is a Jersey girl to do when she moves to a quintessential beach town in Southern Orange County?

What? The timer is ringing?

That was way too much fun.

I can write about my breakfast later AND I may follow up with some articles about women’s sports and how to support them even if you normally spend most of your time going to theater and Celtic Music festivals and art shows and the like.

Who Raised this Fabulous, Concious Young Woman?

I have been annoyed too much lately, especially over things (and people!) I cannot control.

Emma is mature beyond her years: such a delight.

It makes no sense to me to let myself get a flutter when nothing I do will create any sort of solution. Why bother?

I actually let go a bit of this the other day.

It was involving a decision that was made and a person who hadn’t been honest with me.

I knew any further conversation would only make me angry and would not solve anything. I elected to not have any more conversation. I felt so adult, which is appropriate given my age, right?

What floored me more was my calm, polished, sweet fifteen-year-old daughter who shed tears, but didn’t have any form of emotional outbursts at all. She has learned from past mistakes. She understands about reconciliation and forgiveness and maturity. I cried more than she did. I was angrier more than she was.

She had let go of attachment to outcome.

Who raised this fabulous child?

Oh yes, it was me.

I am reminded of a time when I was a newlywed and was attending a concert with a group of other young married people from my church. I was talking about publishing, which I worked in, with a new friend, and discussing markets.

A woman in front of me overheard and started speaking very loudly about how I was wrong in what I was saying and not only was I wrong, my appearance was horrendous and I ought to be ashamed for how I looked. She didn’t say it once, she said it over and over again and louder and more loudly so everyone in my group heard her opinion of me as a stupid, ugly, fat, thoughtless imbecile. Oh, and furthermore, looking as bad as I did was for old women, not young women like me. “What an embarrassment she is!” this woman, referring to me, pronounced to anyone at the Hollywood Bowl within earshot.

When my husband attempted to intervene, I asked him to please stop because it just made her angrier, louder and made me feel worse. I was there to see and listen to Sergio Mendez and make new friends, not to be humiliated.

Well, I was humiliated and never felt completely comfortable with that group of people again.

No one ever talked to me about reconciation, forgiveness and maturity. I was raised with an alcoholic parent. I should have been used to outbursts.

My daughter is raised by a flawed mother, but obviously some of my teaching has paid off.

Finding Life as It Returns while Chasing the Sunset

I took this "Life will not be denied" photo last night while in one of my favorite places... that had a fire in late May. Life is returning now.

I misplaced my phone this morning for the eighty bajillionth time in the last few days. This is upsetting only because I took some great photos last night as I chased the sunset and I want to finish uploading them.

I have actually been enjoying taking photos again and I want to continue cultivating that love by using the photos I take. Last night’s chasing the sunset episode was a practice I started years ago and it usually disappears when I am not in the greatest emotional spaces which is exactly when it should be a heightened priority.

The thing is, when I live inside a deepening depression, I have a tendency to not notice it and basically not notice much. There are bits of the happier version of me that leak out, but usually the “real me” is underground, buried by a morasse of apathy I can’t even recognize.

Last night I slept for nearly eleven hours, which normally I would take as a sign of deepening depression but in this case I see last night’s sleep as a time of healing. I have been sleeping shallowly because I have had stress and nervousness so close to the surface I couldn’t get a good sleep.

So for now I am celebrating my own Sleeping Beauty slow reawakening.

Hey, the fact I referred to my experience as a sleeping beauty is another positive.

If it wasn’t so hot right now I would say the sun is shining again.

Instead, I’ll say… I’m feeling better, inch by inch by shiny happy-tear stretched inch.

Awareness: It is What it is.....

Today I am giving myself points for awareness.

I could have spent five minutes writing about HD, a fabulous poet I adore and who I was reading last night – her words + commentary about women’s literature. It would have been somewhat fitting to write about her and call it my brain dump and it would have been, perhaps, close to accurate.

I think the point of a “brain dump” style stream of consciousness writing period is to put out there whatever is sincerely and truly in front of you.

Katherine looking for keys and talking to herself. The drone of the air conditioner in the background. The lovely early morning light giving way to a humid looking haze.

The fact I held a container of sand paper in my hand and nearly started crying.

For no apparent reason.

And then I texted a dear friend about my depression, creeping into surprising spaces when I’m not expecting it.

People get surprised when they hear I have depression. I sometimes put on that fake smiley face and talk about how many great world changers have also had depression. Artistic types galore have either depression or bipolar disorder. I think its because creative people tend to feel a lot, perhaps more than the average, or perhaps we choose not to put a mask over our feelings.

I did that trick for a lot of years.

Which is why I am crediting myself for being aware, for noting it, for writing it, and then giving myself space to be with it. I don’t feel like crying anymore. It was a fast maneuver. It happened naturally.

That is the difference between awareness and letting my depression freak me out.

When we are grieving I think it is best to let the sadness run the course, completely if necessary, for however long is necessary, different times for different people.

But for run of the mill depression, that always close at hand, tapping me on the shoulder, waiting in my throat to turn into a fretful cough if something provokes anxiety – I have discovered loving awareness works best.

The timer just went off.

According to WORD I have several fragments and run on sentences here.

Too bad. I’m running with them intact. I’m aware and I’m hitting publish anyway.

Falling off - and Climbing Back On - the Wagon: More from Stream of Consciousness Sunday

Perfect moment for some stream of consciousness writing. Today's prompt is.....I have fallen off the wagon….

There are so many wagons I have fallen off I feel like this could be more like a long, slow freight train blocking traffic just going on and on and on and on and on…. so I type away thinking what other metaphors I might use or how specific I may get or how I used to play jacks on the kitchen floor with my mother and why did I fall off the wagon and never play jacks on the kitchen floor with my daughters?

Isn’t the lost art of jack playing worth something anymore?

I have fallen off the wagon of planting flowers in the Spring. I’m not exactly sure why because I really enjoy it. My best guess is my motivation to plant them has less fuel than my desire to do something else, instead. Primarily writing, I think. My favorite wagon which I hardly ever step off of except to check something off the gosh darn gotta do list or if one of my children is in a crisis.

There was a lot of that this week.

I would like to get OFF the children having repeated crises this week. You in on that one?

I am on the wagon of not leaping up to get donuts during a simple five minute write.

I am off the wagon of reading The Color Purple because I lost my copy somehow, I think I may go to the store and buy a brand new one – a NEW copy. That way my idol Alice Walker may get a little money to help feed her chickens, which is something she inspires me to do but then I think of my dogs and nah, not the greatest idea. That is more like a vague idea of traveling on a wagon and/or admiring other people’s wagons yet not having the envy-inspiration to do so myself.

I have fallen off the ezine publishing wagon. I want to get back to it, really. Really? How long has it been, anyway?

This all reminds me of my plan for June: to take a month long retreat-assessment time to see what wagons are worth my riding, which of my wagons need to go to the big loft in the sky, and which of my wagons may benefit from some resting time out in the field covered by weeping willows.

Five minutes is up?

Climbing down from this contemplative round about wagon and back into the rest of my day.

Passionate Detachment and Dealing with What Is...

Jana hosts the weekly Stream of Consciousness Sunday which is a chance to just write write write for only five minutes each week. Usually I write to the prompt she offers. That is what I did this week... and it was far too much fun today.

Here is the prompt:

                            Dealing

 

Earlier this week my friend, Kimberly, texted me saying “I respect your ability to deal with expectations.”

We had been texting back and forth about disappointments, about sometimes sadness. I literally leaned back in my seat to think about that for a moment. I had never really thought of it lately, although in the past I told people one of the secrets to my happiness was having the lowest expectations as possible or have no expectations and then when great stuff happens it is a HUGE reason to celebrate.

I basically wonder, “Why should I receive anything, anyway?” probably after a childhood of somehow intuitively understanding in a family of six kids where we heard repeatedly about the “austerity program of the week” it is better not to hope for the best and instead hope for whatever.

I know, this sounds incredibly pessimistic but if you flip it on its side and really look at it with your eyes wide open, you’ll be able to see it differently.

Some of my theater friends get very upset to not be cast in a role.

I’m usually shocked anyone would want to cast me.

Some of my work friends get upset because they don’t get published or don’t get rave reviews.

I’m grateful to be published and figure reviews are not objective, anyway, they are based more on who the reviewer is than who I am or for that matter, who my work is.

I see getting sad about expectations is a choice. If we choose to have lower expectations while working towards the best possible outcome, we will be so much more grateful when that best possible outcome happens. I call this whole concept “passionate detachment.”

Again,a paradox, and again, it works. To go for “it” – whatever “it” may be, while at the same time not expecting any sort of evaluation more than your experience and the lessons learned along the way. The experience and lessons need to be enough. Once you train yourself to be this way, your life will be immeasurably happier. All you'll have the deal with then is an increased level of contentment and joy in your life.

Some People Call it "Strong Willed" or "Stubborn" : What do YOU call it?

What do you call it? My three kids prefer.... Tenacious....(enjoying the beauty of Zion National Forest last Summer)

We like to call it TENACITY but the outside world calls it by other names like “strong-willed” or “stubborn.”

Somehow they think this trait is a negative thing. I think of it as a powerful gift in determination and consistently making that choice to be determined to bring a goal to fruition rather than being another cog in the wheel like everyone else.

My children even gained a facial expression that screams tenacity that I have seen in my father and probably appears on my own face. The tongue is poked out in the corner and the effort just zings through the shoulders and into the eye brows. It shouts the words of “The Little Engine That Could” chugging along mumbling, “I think I can. I think I can, I think I can.”

Sure, we all share blue eyes. We all share fair skin. We all share a silly streak and a higher than average level than intelligence. What always stands out though is our stubborn streak.

My brother, John, had Down’s Syndrome and the same ridiculous “got to hold on tight because I will do what I will do whether you like it or not or actually, just try to stop me!”

My tenacity helped me to take leaps and bounds when people didn’t even believe I could put my toe in the water.

My daughter made her way into a top notch school and now is being courted by a top notch graduate school even after attending what we fondly call a “ghetto high school.” She knew what she wanted and off she went, even when others never thought she could.

Yes, we will tell you “Tenacity is the polite word for stubborn.” It all sounds good to me!

The Common (Yet Difficult) Question to Answer: What Would You Do if You had 24 Hours to Live.

Its been a while since I have visited Jana's Thinking Space to answer the Stream of Consciousness Five Minute Prompt. I popped over there after resting most of the morning and discovered this was what I was to write about today:

Today’s (totally optional) prompt: What would you do with only 24 hours left to live?

This is always a question that stumps me, especially the thought of finishing it in five minutes. At this point that doesn’t feel much more than five seconds!

Ironically, the first thing I thought was I would apologize for not living up to my potential. I would apologize to people with whom I still have hanging, niggling upsets about our relationship. I want to die with as few tangles left in my bloodstream. I want my spirit to be tangle-free.

I would gather my closest loves and drive to Sequoia National Monument. I would completely enjoy the drive through my beloved Kern County. We would read poetry along the way, tell stories, take lots of photos to document the day. Destination: campfire and storytelling and then actually sleeping inside a sequoia tree. I might pop my head out to see the stars, but it just feels right, my last sleep being in the womb of such a breath takingly beautiful – and to me, very connected – tree.

I would say “I love you!” to every person I see.

I would remind them there is a purpose for them being here, that they have the privilege of stepping into that purpose and if they are ever doubtful remember the words of a dying woman when she tells you, “You are going to be ok. Truly. You are going to be ok, no matter how dark things seem, keep taking your next step. Keep

beginning again.”

Did I mention I would fit as many beloveds into the womb of the tree as possible? Others may sleep close, outside the tree.

I would want us to finish with the campfire and storytelling and then prepare to sleep with lots of singing. Pure, clear, unaccompanied voices. Laughter. Love.

It’s funny, isn’t it? That I thought I couldn’t do it and yet, in five minutes I created the perfect plan if I had twenty-four hours to live.

I think I will create this scenario this Summer, actually. Wouldn’t that be perfect?
