To say I am looking forward to the fall today is like saying “Are you a mammal?” or “Do you enjoy inhaling and exhaling?”
Yes. The fall has been flirting with me for weeks!
For me Fall begins in August this year. August 20, the children go back to school, I get my time back. On September 2, my eldest leaves for her semester at University of Edinburgh. While I will miss her intensely, I am making plans for that week to be all about me for a change.
We have our county fair at the end of September, which means it is usually way too bloody hot to feel like Fall until after that is over, but once it comes and goes, we can count on it getting cooler by Mid October, when Fall truly makes its arrival here.
I want to share a secret with you here, as a sort of prayer-wish for something I am hoping will happen this Fall, too, toward the end of October.
The Zion National Park has a Field Institute and in October – from the 26th until the 29th – there are two programs which would delight me to no end. A journaling program is first followed by a Fall foliage photography adventure.
I have been an amateur photographer (though I have sold some work and I have been commissioned) for several years now and would love to take my photography up a notch. I also think it would help my business in the future with my Writing and Creativity Camps.
I just checked – it would cost $60 for Journaling and $265 for Photography, plus transportation costs.
So there is my mini looking-forward-to-fall discussion and an admission of my wish-prayer for artistic growth in October. I feel wistful and optimistic. I can smell leaves falling on the ground, I can hear the band playing at intermission, I can feel my hands holding the dog’s leashes as we walk, with me needing a sweater because there is a nip in the air.
Yes, I am looking forward to the Fall. I love inhaling and exhaling. I am a mammal.
