Last night I was sitting in my living room, much like I am now, with my lap desk across my legs, wondering, “I am at a time crossroad. I had about fifteen leftover minutes between one appointment and the other.
I have come to recognize fifteen minutes is at times a huge chunk of time, sometimes the only extra time I may have available in an entire week - or longer.
I saw at that time crossroad and consciously asked myself, "What shall I do now?”
The clock hovered on 7:35 pm and I literally heard this question in response from within myself. I like to think the message came from my heart when I heard,
“What will make you happiest when you wake up tomorrow morning? Do that! Do the thing now that will help you feel happiest in the morning.”
When was the last time you heard your intuition speaking about your tasks at hand?
Normally, we are told to have a list of to-do's and the greatest joy is crossing things off the list.
This technique does not dismiss the to-do list or the plan, it simply leaves space for the intuition and the heart to get in on the planning and time management action.
My heart asking a question about happiness in relationship to my slices of time allowed joy to bubble up right then. I didn't get stuck in "oh my goodness, what is the most important and what if I rank the importance wrong and what if I screw up and what if I waste these seven to fifteen minutes to an hour."
I was even happy to consciously make the choice to do a load of laundry.
Usually I am not all that excited to do laundry yet when I layer the question upon the action it completely transformed my thoughts and opinions.
I knew what I wanted to wear today and I knew for a fact that outfit was in the dirty laundry pile.
I know Hafiz probably wasn’t thinking about chores when he wrote “An awake heart is like a sky that pours light,” and yet this is exactly how it felt to hear the question and then live it as I gathered my things to wash and then washed them, dried them, folded them and yes, put them away.
Everything shifted instantly. I heard the happiness question, responded surprisingly with something that normally is not associated with happiness and took immediate action.
There was no angst about chores, no inner arguing, no grief for all the fun I wasn't happening because my heart helped me to "see', intuitively, that laundry could be a blast! Or at least wearing the outfit that needed to be washed would be a blast.
There it was, in a nutshell. It only took the tiniest "sip of time" to simply ask, hear, act and laugh to myself.
This morning I woke up thinking “How to best apply this technique?”
It may be used whenever you find yourself at a time crossroads or a time transition. You know, those fifteen minutes in-between other engagements.
Ask yourself, “What will make me the happiest when I look back over this next two hours,” and in fact, is the question that has formulated much of my planning for this season and into the larger scale future as well.
How about we look at this concept together.
Put your hand over your heart and ask yourself,
"What will make me happiest?"
Watch, ask, listen and act. And remember, always to laugh.
