For the introduction to the Snap Chat series, check out the first post I wrote yesterday here.
Otherwise, continue along here and catch up later. This weekend, we're starting a challenge on SnapChat, especially for writers like you -
Right now, we’re talking about Snap Chat in relationship with Telling and Showing with your writing. One of the first rules of quality writing is to SHOW your readers rather than TELL your readers.
So what does that mean in the conventional sense?
When you write, you create a word picture for your readers rather than saying, “That girl’s dress was incredible!” (or awesome or brilliant or intoxicating, which in this case means nothing.)
To show with words means you paint a word picture using concrete descriptors such as color or cut or a metaphor, “She looked like a goddess straight from the temples of ancient Greece.”
An example from SnapChat came to me during and after the NBA playoffs the other night. People could tell me “LeBron was screaming” and on SnapChat, we were able to see – and experience LeBron James screaming. It was intense and electrifying to hear his shouts of challenge and glee as he lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a stunning victory over the (until that moment) overpowering the Warriors.
I’m not a basketball fan but LeBron James did a marvelous job acting in the movie Trainwreck so I was intrigued by the SnapChat story.
I also noted how the brand Gatorade sprinkled their visual narratives within the Story. They’re probably still there for you to watch.
What do you think about the "celebrity" stories on SnapChat?
As for our continued narration – I issued a challenge in my snaps of “Telling vs Showing” which I will be continuing all week end to be sure you really get this concept into your writing.
Check out my snaps --
All my snaps were free style - no writing or forethought just me talking into my Ipad as I shot snaps. You may write ahead if you like or start with improv free style. It is so important to take action to make progress. You know what I say a lot, right?
Progress and action are the way to positive change and since any action is progress - let's do this!
