I took myself to the dollar theater to watch a bit of “Mocking Jay Part 2” today all because I wanted to be reminded of a scene between Katniss and Peeta where they discuss “real” and “not real.”
I’m still not feeling well – I’ve been down with the flu since last Sunday – but the entire message of “real” being what is true, what can be counted on and “not real” what we make up from our opinion, or out of fear, or because we think that’s what people want to hear from us – has been driven home for me this week.
Somehow this flu has made me an emotional wreck on top of a coughing, hacking, not-able-to-speak-due-to-gravely throat mess.
I was surprised when they got to “real” and “not real” earlier than the scene I had remembered.
It started with discussing the innocuous theme of favorite colors, after Peeta caught an expression on Katniss’ face and read it, distinctly – and Katniss couldn’t hide behind “not real”.
I’m not sure about you, but I don’t want to hide behind “not real” either.
I didn’t want to show up yesterday because I was tired of not feeling well and tangled up in my worry about upsetting people, I forgot what I stand for – I forgot what to say.
It was real: I forgot what to say.
So I took a breath – and a day – and went to the cheap theater to see a movie I had originally seen back in December to remember what it meant to declare “real” and “not real.”
I will always elect to be real over not real.
Doesn’t always make me the most popular, sought after person – but I know I am being who I am meant to be and perhaps this resonates with you as well.
After all, we “real” people tend to stick together, don’t we?
We stick together in appreciation of one another's uniqueness. We don't have to be carbon copies of each other or wear the same sorts of clothes or even vote for the same candidates.
Instead, we follow the muse as Gabrielle Roth did, riding the energy of each of our own one-of-a-kind spirit, nodding in recognition to one another and continuing to cherish the steps to real-ness along the way.
