Show Up: The Heart of Success is Passionate Detachment (Video Included)

What is more important than outcomes?

Showing up and taking action without attachment to outcomes is much more important. It is the heart of passionate detachment – not knowing what the results will be and acting as if the best result is here, now, as you take that first toe-dip into your intention.

I don’t know about you, but I have had plenty of times where I’ve talked a big game about what I was going to do. I did the affirmations in the here and now, I visualized and shared said vision and then I did absolutely nothing because I was either afraid or more often I didn’t know how.

Those “I don’t know how” villains are no longer welcome in my life.

Instead of donning the “I don’t know how” hat, which isn’t my best look by the way, I am going to remember to put my head down and take action with passionate detachment.

What does that mean?

I may have a goal I can’t control because other people are a part of the result.

Right now, for example, I am about to start a new Periscope challenge and my aim is to have 1,000 followers by the end of January. I can’t control whether or not I achieve that goal because I am not physically inhabiting the choices of those people who may decide to follow me.

What I can do, though, is create a game to increase my targeted followers by showing up and having fun on the way to creating a healthy, vibrant, vital group of followers whose lives I am impacting with my content.

When I show up, 100% authentic on other scopes and content helpfully, I may be growing my followers.

When I show up, 100% authentically me on ‘promote your scopes’ and ‘past your casts’ and in fact, on any social media platform talking about my periscope broadcasts and others periscope broadcasts, I may be growing my following.

When I show up, 100% authentically me out in the world in person, on my blog, at meetings, in coffee shops, at the park, in the grocery store I may in fact be growing my following.

Crucial and most important of all?

Showing up and playing.

Showing up and experimenting.

Showing up and letting go of the results while the whole time being mindful of the results I intend.

It is a joyful dance, this experience of passionate detachment.

In fact, in this writing I gave myself five minutes to complete my message.

I’ve gone over a couple minutes and instead of berating myself for not being as speedy as I had hoped, I am congratulating myself for getting it done, for starting and finishing, for sharing and showing up… I think you know the rest – showing up, 100% authentically me.

Lessons from a Blank Notebook: What Do Your Simplest Actions Say to You About You?

I bought a new notebook last night. My previous notebook only had two pages left and as a morning pages, writing practice purist – I wanted to be sure I had three blue-lined, blank page canvases to toss words upon when I woke up. This would be the beginnings of the end of 2015 so it felt sacred, somehow.

I write now, this morning, and I wonder if my quest after the “just-right-notebook” was stuck in the “wanting to get it right” or simply wanting to enjoy the sacred transition time between the (obviously) manmade construct between one year and the other.

What cooked overnight was my realization I almost didn’t buy a three dollar notebook because it was “too expensive” and almost went home with a silly troll notebook that was a mere two dollars and twenty five cents.

Seventy five cents between what I wanted: college ruled, flexible yet firm cover, in a favored color with the bonus of a pocket in front in case I wanted to collect anything interesting along the way like leaves or ticket stubs or perhaps even a photo I take and print sometime in the days to come – and what would work but wasn’t ideal.

With the slightly more expensive notebook I even got to give a “yoobi” (one for you, one for me) which is a valuable gift to a needy classroom in the ridiculously low priced investment in the better notebook and for whatever trivial reason, I hesitated before I bought it.

What does this say about me to me?

First it says I have a habit of being afraid of spending money, even if it is for something that is perfect for me and that I find a lot of value contained within it.

Second, it says I nearly always choose the less expensive, even if it isn’t exactly what I want, even if the difference isn’t very much. I come from a long line of “a penny saved is a penny earned” thinkers. This is true AND third, it is true that if I buy what I really want that is perfect for me the statement “I am worth an extra penny. I am inherently valued and valuable.”

I actually bought both notebooks because I don’t believe the answer is an either/or sort of thing. Questions and answers rarely are, after all. Instead, I will end 2015 and start 2016 with the just right for me notebook. The second, close to right notebook for me, will serve me well also, after this first one is full.

The troll notebook will remind me of my well-rehearsed, no longer working for me narrative I am setting aside for a better version that feels so right yet also a bit frightening.

Isn’t it (fun, interesting, odd) choose and insert your favored adjective how purchasing something as simple as a notebook may lead to an insight for personal growth and development?

At the end of your day, take notice of your simplest actions and what they say to you and about you. Discern what it is you want to say to yourself about yourself.

Question: What will make love tangible in your life?

I have a goal I gleaned from my "Autumn Bucket List”.   Since this is our last full week of Autumn, I felt it was important to honor the work I did back in October when I claimed “Make love tangible” as something important, that deserved my focused presence and attention.

Yes, “Make Love Tangible” is what the goal proclaims.

It is homage to Kahlil Gibran in The Prophet when he wrote, “Work is love made visible.” My work is also loving the world, as poet Mary Oliver says in “The Messenger” in her collection titled   Thirst.

How do we make love tangible?

I started my day making love for myself tangible.

Self-love is the foundation for all other love, so this makes sense, doesn't it?

I sat at the kitchen table for my morning writing practice. Daily writing practice is simply the most powerful method I have found to move myself forward in all aspects of my life. On cue, Alice-the-Cat joined me.

She loves “keeping me company” as I write, which I have also noticed is remarkably similar to sibling rivalry. I give my notebook attention and she decides she wants to sit on my notebook. She wants to be a part of the daily scratching. She wants to see what I am doing, smell the pen or pencil. She wants to maneuver her way across my page.

After putting her on the floor for the third time, I held her an extra moment and said, “Alice, if you do that again, I will need to put you in my bedroom until I am done.”

I put her on the floor and she climbed back to the table and my notebook. I scooped her up, held her close, accepted her purrs as love and put her in my room and quietly shut the door.

Alice got sequestered, my morning pages got written, I gained clarity and I have taken ground on several long procrastinated upon goals.

This is how we make love tangible.

We love ourselves and we act in alignment with that love.

My work is about loving the world, making love tangible - and you are in that world. I got my writing done so that I could share my insights with you and YOU may then have your OWN insights to act upon.

Did you hear that?

My morning writing practice was done so that I could share my insights with you and YOU may then have your OWN insights to act upon.

I got content to my website designer.

The same item had been on my to-do list (creating that specific content) only slightly touched – for days. This morning, the morning I loved myself first, I had a breakthrough.

This small, easy-to-do task got marked off the to-do list and got put squarely on my TA-DA! List.

I got closer to finishing my website, finishing a book project all put my heart and my life work out in a bigger, more expansive way. The more people who know what I am up to, the more lives are touched, the more the planet will shift into the direction of all that is positive, all that is sacred, all that expresses what is in our hearts.

Even the “tasky-y tedium” I abhor most of the time becomes bearable and in fact, celebration worthy when we recognize it as Love Made Tangible: cleaning my son’s bathroom. Putting laundry away. Running errands.
All of this brings love to life in a direct way and multiplies our efforts.

I did this with you in mind. I wrote freely on my notebook pages so that I could communicate more clearly with you. I filled images in my art journal so that I could communicate with you clearly.

Let’s start (or continue) the week making love REALLY tangible. Not faking it, not doing things half way and especially not succumbing to the destructive habits of snarky or judgment or whining.

You have the power to make love tangible.

Let’s make it into a game.

Key 4: What Positive Thoughts Start Your Day (or) What Are You Looking Forward to Right Now?

It is not an accident you arrived here today. Please read on, using the material here today on its own or as a part of the ongoing series.

This is potent life coaching material on its own and it is also Key Number 4 in 7 Keys to Discover Your Most Satisfying Word-Theme of the Year for 2016.

Prompt: My first positive thoughts in the morning are about.....

One of my best friends has said on more than one occasion, “I don’t know how you bound out of bed every morning the way you do.”

There are significant reasons for my get up and go in the morning.

First, I am passionate about what I am actively creating in my life. I know every day I will collaborate with my son to have a satisfying mother-son relationship. I know I am aiming to make the world a better place through my life coaching, my writing workshops and the retreats I leave. I know my words make a difference with others. I know people will glean goodness, positivity in participating in and watching my periscope broadcasts.

I know when I take the time to complete my daily writing and rituals, everything is better. I have also learned when I get stuck with words, I can play with paint and crayons and other mixed media to find my way.

This all starts with the common denominator of being excited at what lies ahead of me every day.

I see the day as a blank canvas I have the privilege to splatter paint upon in whatever colors I choose.

I see the day as a finite container for whatever I am up to, be it activism or a day of intentional play or sessions with clients or twitter parties or picnics with friends.

I see the day as an indication of my past, my present and my future.

Annie Dillard wrote, “How we spend our days is, ofcourse, how we spend our lives.” My day is a microcosm of my month and my year.

When I can say with sureness, “Right now I look forward to…” and can state what I am excited about, it makes a difference. This morning I broke it into tiny chunks. “This hour I look forward to finishing up these three pages of free flow writing so I can take a photo and send it to my writing buddy.” In making that statement, it increased my excitement over a very simple accomplishment.

I looked over the daytime hours and wrote, “I look forward to finishing my “about” page for my website. This project actually started close to a year ago and today, I intend to complete it. This could be just an item to tick off my to-do, but for me, it will launch a celebration.

Prompt: “Today, I look forward to…” and then go deeper, wider or smaller and narrower to define your day, week, month and inevitably your 2016.

Look for your common denominators.

These may point you directly toward your word theme of the year.

If lists were prayers – a concept offered to me today from Kat McNally via Reverb, 2015.

I have approached lists differently this year. I haven’t been in a place of linear top ten or the like lists like I have in the past.

I have had big shifts in the past from creating lists in such form. They’ve worked and they haven’t.

Perhaps approaching lists as prayers might help.

Perhaps if I took my current approach of creative, artsy non-language “lists” and combined them with the old-school approach, it would increase the prayer-ful, sacred aspect of them.

Lately I’ve been quite open to trying on, trying out, and going with the flow rather than just talking and thinking about trying on, trying out and going with the flow.

I’ve been working for months on an “autumn goal list” mobile.

The idea was right on, the execution has stalled.

In the past, I made lists and they wound up buried.

My mobile isn’t buried and in fact, it is quite well suited to becoming a “list” for the seasons to come rather than August. It is based in categories and “being” goals as well as “doing” goals, so – dare I write another “perhaps” I ought to re-visit and re-store my faith in my mobile.

Here - a video of how I work on my lists - and how I really want to experience my life both in October and now, at the end of the year with some questions for contemplation as well.

 Funny how a smile crossed my face as those words found their way to the page and as I watched this video I made in that present moment, really not thinking about myself, later, looking back.

One list I will vow-pray to make – a list of seven passion-power questions to pray daily as a part of a daily ritual throughout the rest of December. Each day I will pray one of the questions into my consciousness and see what bubbles up as a result.

I’ll take the next two days to compile them since the goal is 7 questions time 4 weeks which equals 28 days the last time I took Math. It was a long time ago but I do still remember.

Praying lists. Lists of prayers.

This sounds just right.

"Yes, I experienced this (whatever happened) - not as things to just tick off a list."
