I don’t know what I was so worried about with her
transferring schools!
Sixteen-year-old Emma is living my dream.
She is obviously much more resilient than I was and she also knows how to make people enjoy her presence in class.
On her second day in the chemistry class, the teacher told them to break into small groups to complete a specific task. She hadn’t even had time to think of which group to join when a deep voice came from behind her saying, “Emma, come on, Emma, we’ve got you.”
My Emma found her way into being recruited to a group that consisted of five brawny football players and her. I know, you’re thinking, “Julie, you are a feminist, how can you have dreams like this, carryovers from high school and all?”
It isn’t that I want to take chemistry or am interested in working alongside a bunch of brawny football players now, but I would have been thrilled if it was high school and this was the case for me. There are a few problems with my dream though: we didn’t have brawny football players at my high school, we had lanky surfers with long hair falling into their faces.
You know, I was just thinking how it does smack of equality – young men valuing a young woman for her brain as well as her ability to be curious, insightful and very quick with the one-liners and jokes.
We are on Day Four and so far there have been no bad days. Yesterday she didn’t want to talk about her day, but considering her schedule with so many late nights and performances for the past few weeks, I would barely be able to walk if I was her.
Yes, sixteen-year-old Emma is living my dream.
