Perfect moment for some stream of consciousness writing.
I wish I taught my children about roughing it earlier in their lives. It is something that doesn’t translate into fifteen-year-old Emma’s vocabulary at all. Maybe if she falls in love with the right man some day it will, but for now I have to beg her or look completely pitiful for her to join me on even the easiest paved paths.
We went to Zion National Park this Summer and she waited in the car. She didn’t get out to check out incredible rock formations at The Arches National Park. I am planning to lure her to Yosemite this January with snow. I’m not going to mention anything like “The Great Outdoors” because… well, then she’ll turn off to it.
I, on the other hand, love sleeping outdoors. I actually love sleeping on wood platforms. A bunch of people in sleeping bags, my sleeping bag and me make for an absolutely lovely night’s sleep. It is natural: you are on a platform preparing to sleep and people start sharing stories they wouldn’t normally share. It is like the Kumbaya of sleep situations.
I haven’t done it for years, but the last time I did it was on a porch in Shaver Lake. We were sheltered a little bit by a roof overhang, but it drizzled and not one of us took our sleeping bags and went inside. Did I mention I knew none of these people before that yet after our sleeping bag, outside with no ceiling slumber party we were all fast friends.
My eldest daughter, Katherine, proclaimed she would start her children roughing it at a very young age. I hope she sticks to her word, because once that strong opinion begins, I haven’t found a way to getting it back.
