Prompt 1 from Esther Fox - Project Reflect 2012:
We all have ways of coping with the stresses of life, whether it be cuddling with a cat or curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. Describe one thing you did this year to cope with your day to day, to escape from reality. How did this one thing come about?
I first read this yesterday and spent the rest of the day running from place to place. I got home from a Soul Collage workshop just in time to be called by my daughter, Emma, asking if I could drive around a bunch of high school choir members. I agreed, not knowing it would be a nearly three hour commitment. That’s love.
This year I have had a very stress-filled year, the worst of which was being diagnosed with melanoma in September and having to go through my first surgery since I was six years old and had my tonsils out. The surgery was ucky but worse than that was the reality that I can now add the name “Cancer survivor” to my long list of titles that could make a series of movies for Lifetime TV.
It is hard for me to name “One Thing”. I think the overarching one thing would be giving myself permission to create differently with different outcomes. I tried a lot of new techniques and taught myself to create new kinds of jewelry, paper flowers, layering of photos (which goes into the jewelry and flowers.) I use different materials now – including hand written letters from people I have never known but were young in the 1920’s to 1940’s. I took up SoulCollage which is also a great way to consistently get together with friends, since I only seem to manage to make cards in a group setting.
And that’s ok. I gave myself permission and I took that permission and ran with it.
In a variety of ways.
I am so glad to get my first post written, even if it is a day late!
