#SummerBlogChallenge: Day 17 ~ My Triad of Positive Personality Traits

Summer Blog Challenge Today -- name 3 Things you are proud of about your personality.

Yesterday I went to a SoulCollage workshop. One of my cards screams all three of these pieces of my personality – not sure if you will see it, but now that I reflect, I totally see it.

It took me a long time to get my butt in the seat to write this post – perhaps the image was still haunting me plus I thought it said it so well without words.

Passionate – I live Plutarch’s quote: “A mind is not a vessel to be filled, it is a fire to be ignited.” I actually think as a very passionate person you could replace it with many  other things “A ______ is not a vessel to be filled, it is a fire to be ignited.”

A Resume is not a vessel to be filled, it is a fire to be ignited. Passionate people are wanted in the workplace.

A Kitchen is not a vessel to be filled, it is a fire to be ignited! (In my case, finding passion for kitchen tasks is a lot more possible if I am happy to be in there. I can make do with any old tools, but if I’m not into it I will order take out.

A relationship is not a vessel to be filled with “stuff” it is a fire to be ignited with experience!

See, I can go a long way with my passion. With an ignited fire, energy moves. I love my passion, even though sometimes it embarrasses me.

I used to have a website devoted to Passion – 5Passions to be exact. Passion for Purpose, Parenting, Poetry & Prose, People and Discovering Your Passion. I miss it – so am considering birthing a renewed website with the words “five” instead of the number 5.

Optimistic  I am a quintessential glass half filled kind of person. It is so strange to simultaneously be so optimistic yet I have experienced some pretty nasty things. I suppose it is because of those nasty things I remain optimistic in some strange, paradoxical sense. It certainly seems illogical at times! (which may be why I continue being optimistic!)

Open  I have yet to find someone who is more open than I am. I know you must be out there – but we have yet to cross paths!

I think this is the latest I have posted a Summer Blog Challenge post. I think the heat has gotten to me.

#SOCSunday ~ Fatherhooding Memories

Today's prompt from Stream of Consciousness Sunday from AllThingsFadra.com:

 Talk about fatherhood: your father, your husband as a father, yourself as a father. How important is it and the impact on our children?

I share stories about my father regularly these days. In fact, I think I got my storytelling abilities partially from the Jordan Blood. He has never been one to talk a lot, but the talking he does has always been significant.

When I was a teenish girl, my Dad drank a lot. He was or I suppose still is an alcoholic but he hasn’t had a drink since shortly after my twenty-first birthday which has been almost twenty years now. My Mom says he has elected not to remember those old days of drunken-ness.

I say more power to him. Why should he remember? He is eighty-one years old and is a completely different man than the one I was raised with as a child. I prefer to remember the man he has become than the way he acted back then.

He did the best he could, just as we all do and did.

Nowadays he loves taking my kids and me geocaching. We go out into the spaces around Flagstaff to find treasures. My children will remember this Grandpa. The one who eats picnic lunches with them in remote spots, the one who seems to know all the older people in Flagstaff, the one who cares for their Grandma who needs more care than she used to need: she has Parkinson’s now, after all.

She is doing great, but it is doubtful she would be doing so well without my Dad.

My children can’t imagine their Grandpa being the man they hear about in my stories.

I tell them it wasn’t their Grandpa, it was a different version of him, just like I was a different version of me back then. I like to think I have evolved into a more forgiving, more mature daughter who recognizes the humanity of all the people I meet.

I remember when my brother died. It was the first thing I remember doing anything remarkable or memorable for my Dad. I saw to it we honor my brother with a celebration of life. He had Down’s Syndrome so naturally didn’t have a wife or kids to be sure such a thing happened.

He did, however, have me, his older sister and also his father’s daughter.

I will forever remember Dad’s single word as I left that day – after many people gathered in the park behind our Dana Point house and shared stories. He looked at me and just said – technically three words, “Thank you, Julie. Thank you.”

Katherine, my eldest, said she was happy she stood next to my Dad during the service. He let himself be emotional, and she held his hand as he cried.

Last Summer we went on one of our picnics after a not so successful Geocaching adventure, and we talked about my childhood special days. I shared some truths about myself on one specific special day with Dad where I was scared about bears the entire time but was more scared to say anything to Dad for fear he would get mad at me for being scared.

We, all five of us – my three children, my Dad and me – laughed about that.

I’ve gone over my five minutes. I hope you’ll forgive me.

I want to say though – my heart goes out today to the men who might have been Dads if their lives had turned out differently. I always feel a special tug on this day, since I experienced so many mother’s days wishing I was a Mom before I had my children.

Another Summer Blog Challenge post, another Confession...

Are there some things you just don’t want to bring out in public? Like, I don’t want to confess to that one or the other one… or really? Can I somehow NOT say anything about THAT?

I want to hide in the corner on this question from Summer Blog Challenge!

My fitness regime has gone into remission this Spring and I need to bring it back out.

Perhaps this is part of the reason for the challenge, eh?

I would like to get back into Zumba and I would like to get back into walking and yoga. I suppose I need to get my feet moving out the door then instead of simply talking about it.

Who out there wants to hold one another accountable?

Busy Women's Tips: How to Create Mini - Retreats ~ In the Moment Vacation Getaways ~ to Feel More Peaceful

This post started from a SummerBlogChallenge entry that begged to be expanded upon. I also wanted to provide content of value for some (hopefully!) new friends from the Blog Hop Til You Drop Friday!

To see the Summer Blog Challenge entry, visit here.  One of my Life Tips (Secrets, Keys, Etc) was this – “Create mini-retreats/vacations within your day.” Before you read further, when I first wrote this tip, I thought, "I hope I don't get punched in the mouth for saying this.

Remember: Create mini-retreats/vacations within your day.

Yes, the stuff you call drudgery is capable of being transformed into revelry. Even grocery shopping. Even diaper changing.

Prepare for a whine-fest before I get to the point of my story.

My most hated “hafta do” every day is what I fondly refer to as “kidschlepping.”

I know, I have the soccer mom van and I have been raising children for more than twenty years now so you would think I would be over myself and accept the fact of driving kids to and fro.

If you only knew… when my daughters were 7 and 12 I gave them summer bus passes so they could take themselves to their Summer programming. It was awesome. They were independent and I was free to do my work as well.

See, when you work from home (I am a writer and teacher of teleclasses – at home) people don’t realize you actually have a drive to work, not a drive to drive kids hither and yon. Maybe some people do, but it isn’t me.

Today I was driving my son home from his Summer Programming. It was 5:30 pm. I had been awake for twelve hours. I needed to get home so I could teach a class at 6 and then run off to rehearsal which begins at 7:30.

I was feeling run down, my brain a foggy mess, and I looked at a median next to my Mom Van. It was a median where someone had planted flowers: in this case daisies. The intersection was in a questionable neighborhood. On one corner, a welfare hotel where prostitutes run their businesses. On another corner, a check cashing establishment, on another corner, a large equipment rental, on another corner, a dilapidated, long ago abandoned warehouse.

On the median, daisy like flowers… sunflower, daisy crosses. I know that isn’t the proper name but I knew as I gazed at them softly blowing in the breeze, I stopped feeling crappy and overscheduled.

I felt myself driving in peace along the expansive South Dakota prairie. I felt myself enjoying my children. I felt myself adventuring through life.

Instantly I went from grouchy to not grouchy at all.

I turned the span of a red light into a mini-retreat.

15 Life Tips (Secrets, Keys, Guideposts) to Your Better Life Journey

Hold lightly & apply with love.

I am going to preface this list of life tips with the last tip. Please read this as a beginning, an end and an in-between: Hold all of these tips lightly with love rather than duty. Duty is a fun-sucker, love is a fun-creator.

   1.  Pack lightly. It is tiring to carry too much stuff! I have a rule: one book, one notebook, dry clothes for the kids even on day trips. And socks in winter.

   2.  Give yourself (and your children or life traveling companions) space and permission to time yourselves out, to separate for quiet and rejuvenation.

   3.  Write things down, witness your moments & document with photos.

   4.  Make time for friends at least a couple times a week. Lunches, walks, coffee, swinging on the swingset in the park, painting, giggling, people watching….

   5.  Create mini-retreats/vacations within your day. Yes, the stuff you call drudgery is capable of being transformed into revelry. Even grocery shopping. Even diaper changing.

   6.  Forgive others as a way to practice forgiving yourself. Or, forgive yourself as a practice to forgiving others. Forgive.

   7.  Practice detachment/letting go/surrender… not with a grudging spirit, with a loving spirit.

   8.  Make eye contact. Let people know you see them. If you worry about “staring people down” practice loosening or lightening your gaze.

   9.  Be prepared with resources, possibilities  and thoughts, don’t be so concerned with stuff. First aid kits and sunscreen rock.... as do cameras and notebooks. That being said...

   10. Offer smiles. Offer tears. Hold back advice until asked. Offer Kleenex.

   11. Reach out when you need to or even when you don’t.

   12. Throw parties. Attend parties. Praise parties.

   13. Make writing thank you notes an art form.

   14. Always have something to look forward to in the near future and in the slightly distant future.

Preview to #SummerBlogChallenge: Life Tip #7: Make time for friends at least a couple times a week.

I am working on a post for my Summer Blog Challenge buddies and with each “life tip” I write, I think, “This would make a fantastic mini-blog post” so here goes a quicky before I make Samuel his breakfast.

1. Life Tip #7: Make time for friends at least a couple times a week.

There was a time when I sat in a business women’s conference listening to Jack Canfield speak. He is one of the masterminds behind the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, among other things.

He was talking about the importance of setting life goals. I can completely buy into that since I enjoy the process of goal making and then I especially love goal reaching.

He told us if we made a list of 100 Life Goals our life would change dramatically. He even told us to buddy up with someone to share our goals. I agreed to do that with my secretary. The next day I went into her office with my list.

She laughed and said she hadn’t written her list but her 100 goals would be something like this:  Number 1: Get out of bed every morning and proceed. Make time for friends at least a couple times a week with number 2  being identical to number 1 and number 3 being identical and #27 and number 48 and number 73 and number 99: Get out of bed every morning and proceed.

I remember not understanding at all, she didn’t follow Jack Canfield’s assignment.

My earnest-younger self makes me laugh now. I actually have a certain appreciation for the simplicity of her goal: Get out of bed every morning and proceed.

One of the goals I made that still stands out to me is this: “Have lunch with a friend at least once a week.”

I am slightly embarrassed to admit this took me years to achieve. It isn’t always lunch, though, sometimes it is just hanging out,  sometime it is going for a walk, sometime it is writing together or reading together. Now I spend time almost daily with a friend or two.

A friend of mine asked me recently how I was getting through the aftermath of a severe depressive episode. One of the tips I shared was, “Leave time open for friends and then, intentionally spend time with them.”

It is a goal, a plan, an intention that will serve you perhaps more than you know.

Alert + Action + Positive Detachment = A More Passionate Life

It is not uncommon for me to be driving somewhere, on my way to one event or another when I see something I absolutely must photograph. I must recollect it, somehow. I must keep the image fresh so that I may use it later in my creativity. Maybe.

And maybe not. I don’t feel the need to get attached to whether or not I will ever write about the row of abandoned shopping baskets in an alley near an incredible mission church I found driving home from East High the other day.

I don’t feel the need to get attached to whether or not I will incorporate a photo of a moon blossom into a collage.

I did, however, make sure I included my strong attraction to a certain volunteer palm tree growing on the corner of 20^th and A streets in Downtown Bakersfield Saturday, in my writing because I did so nearly immediately.

I remember once a quote that says something like “Write what you can’t stop thinking about…” Not “write what you know” but instead, write what keeps you awake, write the image that causes you to turn your car around and go investigate.

Less than a half hour after I changed my path to get a photo of a volunteer palm growing between another tree’s roots and the gutter, I wrote about it. For those who don’t know, a volunteer palm is one who just grows someplace without being intentionally planted by a human.

These are not uncommon in Bakersfield. I have one in my backyard who went from being a toddler to a now svelte teen in what seemed like overnight.

This palm, though – she cried out to be noticed. She was so small and so cloaked in so many other things happening in such a dense spot, why would a normal person rushing from one place to another even glance in her direction?

I had a writing prompt later and I wrote “My poetic mind is the volunteer palm, a Mexican fan – inserting herself insistently between the massive tree trunk the curb the gutter the sidewalk.” Here you can barely make her out, just like my poetic mind at times goes underground. With people who can't hear her, she stops talking. She is still there but only for those who notice her.

Amidst all the other trappings of life, my poetic mind stands tall, even in the most unlikely spaces.

The key is to stay alert for these tiny awarenesses to speak to you.

If you live like this: completely, passionately alive, you will notice nuances you have never seen before, right in your neighborhood or maybe even reflected in the eye of your closest friends and loved ones.

Be alert to surprises and lead a more fulfilling life. Sure, you can spend your days complaining and fault finding and forgetting the beauty and wonder that surrounds you. Life is just so much better when you allow shopping carts and volunteer palms and nearly invisible smiles take the place of a shallow, neverending whine of some sort or other.

10 Surprises (and not so surprising Delights!) for the End of 2012

How do I you see yourself at the end of 2012? – Thanks to the The Summer Blog Hop Challenge, I get to contemplate more of my near future. It feels very good, actually ~ I decided to make it into a list because #1) I love lists. #2) I am in a listmaking mood. #3) It helped me stay focused and intentionally powerful with few words. Perhaps it would be wise for you to make your list?

1. I will have traveled more with my children: explored more of the Southwest instead of plugging into the Northeast. Since Katherine started attending Smith College in Western Massachusetts, I have made more trips to New England than I ever did in the past. Thankfully I love it there, but I also feel like it is time to expose my children to more of the west since we are Californians.
2. I will have made my first trip to Europe. Katherine is taking her senior year abroad. I am going to visit her in December and fly home with her. Fantastic!
3. I will have more Writing Campers from more places. YAY! My unique writing and creativity virtual retreat/camp/space of inspiration is growing. Usually in Summer it slows. Not this year. I am grateful.
4. I will have more books published. Love the options from CreateSpace.
5. My children will be content educationally and socially. Each of them are having adventures in learning for which I feel so fortunate.
6. My home will be even more welcoming than it is now. I have several projects in the works. Emma’s room, the hallway, and continuing to show my photography, my painting and more of my Women’s Sphere? projects. I want to continue to share hospitality with couch surfers.
7. 7.       I will have continued to spread my artistic wings. So excited to do more paper art. Learning to make paper is exciting me so much… more mixed media techniques here I come!
8. I will have active spiritual practices that delight and inspire me. Morning pages, walking, art, Lectio Devina… what else? I’ll be shown!
9. 9.       I will laugh, daily. Since October of 2011 I have been actively engaged in another battle with depression. I am grateful to say I am winning. I will continue to be victorious. I will laugh, daily.
10. I will remember to let go of attachment to outcomes – so if the ways I see myself are 1,000 times different than I write now, almost halfway through, I will know everything IS going to be just fine because with resilience it always is, it always is... just fine.

#SummerBlogChallenge Day 12 - Ummm, must I tell this story? What was My Worst (physical)Injury & How it happened.

Day 12 --Worst (physical) injury I've had and how it happened.

This is one of those “how stupid, exactly how stupid can I be?” moments.

I was thirty seven when it happened.

I finally could no longer say, “I have never broken a bone in my body!” after that September afternoon at the Roller Skating Rink. I was on a mission to be sure my daughters wouldn’t be embarrassed about not being able to roller skate. There were birthday parties to attend and the like. I didn’t want my babies to be left out, so I did what every wise mother would do.

I decided to take roller skating lessons with them. They were seven and one and a half at the time.

They put on their skates and were doing quite well. I put on my skates and was doing quite well.

After the lesson, it was time for free skating.

This basically means they let everyone else in, those who are much better skaters, so the newbies can learn to negotiate a much more crowded skating space.

I was doing so well I decided to show off for my teacher, a woman close to my age unlike all the other skating people who were much younger than us.

I was showing her and she was coaching me to straighten my shoulders. I followed her guidance, straightened up and overstraightened up and down I went, crashing backwards and did what every inexperienced faller does: I attempted to stop my fall with my hand and arm.

I felt a sharp twinge but leaped back up. I didn’t want my girls to think they shouldn’t get right back up when they fall. I kept skating, although more slowly and with much more care.

We went home about an hour later and my arm still hurt.

I went to see Armageddon, the movie was actually in the theaters then. I repeatedly got up to hold my arm closer to my body than I could in my movie seat. It hurt and I could no longer move it on its own, I had to coax it around with my other arm.

The movie let out and I went to urgent care.

An hour later a doctor came into the room I was waiting in and said, “The good news is you don’t need surgery. The bad news is, you broke your arm worse than the eight year old girl next door did.”

I went on to get a fabulous bright pink cast and as soon as I got it back, I was back at the skating rink, getting better and better.

I only wish those were digital camera days. I don’t have a single photo momento of me in all my lovely pink cast glory. All that’s left is this memory. J
