It was five-twenty-eight a.m when she met him.
He was there, in the parking lot, in full regalia: cowboy hat, belt buckle, boots, oversized grey moustache and healthy belly.
His cell phone was attached to his ear. It was the one surprise he bore and he bore it well. “Someone is here, just a second” his drawly voice said to whoever is making cell phone calls at five-twenty-eight on a Saturday morning.
“What time do you open here?” she said, attempting to smile beneath her more than a little bit unkempt hair.
“We open at 8 a’m, Ma’am,” he answered, smiling, “The growers get here early to set up so hey, you can go have a cup of coffee and come back later!”
Such a gentlemen, like she often imagined “real” farmers to be.
She smiled and waved as she left the parking lot, an odd contentment settling in her way-too-early-to-be-awake-on-a-Saturday belly.
