It is strange: I haven't attempted fiction for a while except for briefly in January of this year. When I saw an announcement for JuNoWriMo I figured, "What the hell? It isn't crazy busy November and I write really fast. The worst I can do is write absolute garbage but at least it will be a completion.
After all, in a weak 30 minute writing sprint I average 600 words. In a good 30 minute writing sprint I can write over 1000. I can (almost) easily snag 1667 - the average daily necessary - in an hour of writing a day. The good news is this: I am falling in love with my characters as they appear in my mind, so in my final days of preparation I decided to write a couple character studies.
I figured I would work this one into my StoryADay adventure as well.
So - this is Laura, one of the four main characters in my JuNoWriMo novel, which is untitled right now.
I love the concept of Character Study - reminds me of my acting experience. Ironically, I am starting rehearsals for a new (to me) play this Sunday.
Character Study 1:1 Laura ~
Laura ate Monday’s leftover breakfast straight from the Tupperware on Wednesday morning. They keyboard called her but once she arrived, it sat silent, mocking.
“Who are you to call yourself a writer?” it seemed to sneer.
It sort of reminded her of her husband who last night had muttered, “Who are you go call yourself my wife.”
To hell with him and to hell with the keyboard.
She paced her living room now writing studio and puttered her way to the kitchen for a refill of her water. If nothing else, she knew her newish refrigerator delivered water cold and pure. Photos of her children, past and present, smirked back at her.
“How can I let you down?” she asked a seven-year-old ponytailed Amanda, who now at fourteen is chronically lamenting her face, her own body, her acne, her concern about whether her deodorant was working well… or not.
She stormed across the house and helped her butt find her chair.
She poised her fingers with a newfound commitment and started to write.
