Beatrice Harraden: Novelist, Suffragette and role model for the women writers of today.
I didn’t know who she was until I began my research for this project, but once I discovered her I knew I had to include her to represent the letter “B”. First of all, her earliest success as a novelist came with Ships That Pass in the Night which was published in 1893. How could a romantic like me NOT follow up with a 19th century novelist who became a suffragette who wrote a book with that title?
Beatrice was a part of the Women's Writers Suffrage League . Their primary goal is one we writers do (hopefully) continue to uphold for whatever our cause may be: "to obtain the vote for women on the same terms as it is or may be granted to men. Its methods are those proper to writers - the use of the pen."
She was a part of this group until they began using violent methods to get their word across.
Isn’t it sad I can find no quotes for her, easily, though I can find quotes easily by Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan? This is why I am doing this work: to ignite the fire of love I have for women writers past and present whose voices are valued by me and hopefully, will soon be valued by more people.
I am looking forward to reading more of Miss Beatrice’s work so I may glean more quotes and insights from her pages. Sometimes it is up to us to make things happen, just like it was up to the Women’s Writers Suffrage League to use their pens to obtain their goal.
