Let's Get Wild with Writing ~ Oh, how I long for words!

It is sort of like not having sex after having lovely, regular and bonus romps throughout the week.

I want to get wild with my writing. Yes, I know I can have writing quickies. In fact, I have been having quickies, but it isn’t the same as languid lolling about, admiring words, flirting with words, delighting in words and laughing, gasping for breath, my fingers moving, hands surveying the keyboard for just the right spot and then – it happens.

You know what I’m talking about. Sheer ecstacy.

One of the signs I mean business is the moment I sweep my long hair into a ponytail before sitting down at my writing desk. I will have no distractions from word-love, not even the slight curve of my brown hair will deter me.

This morning was one of those days.

My writing has taken a back seat to another passion of mine lately. I have written about it here recently… so much so I feel somewhat like a broken record to bring it up again. My passion for theater and performance has been taking up to ten hours a day this week which leaves very little time for writing on top of Mommying, Homeloving, my part-time job and any other needs which have popped up, including spending time on Emma’s theater adventures.

Writing, my anchor art, still gets attention but oh, I long to give it more.

One exciting thing about theater frenzied times is they are always finite.

Right now I am hanging on until Sunday night, when I will go out for friends after my sixth performance of the weekend and throw back a drink or two in celebration of a creative work out unlike any before.

Monday will find me back here, smiling and content and ready for word-love, word-adventures and yes, lets be honest: word-lust.

I’ll shake out my ponytail. I’ll light candles. I’ll turn on my favorite “let’s make this a playful serious very artistic and surprising session….” music and give room for the magic to happen.

This is my ROW80 Wednesday weekly, unconventional ROW80 check in when instead of giving the facts and figures of my writing week, I share an aspect of who I am being as a writer while I am ROWing.

Wednesday #Wishcasting, February 29: Where do you wish to be Fierce?

I read today’s Wishcasting question from the Jamie Ridler Studios before I started my daily Mom Schlep: getting kids to where they are meant to be and then getting me back here where I seek (and find) refuge at my desk.

Jamie asks today, "Where do you wish to be fierce?"

I was first slightly taken aback by the word “Fierce” until I remembered how very fierce I appear to others, especially when I am doing my activist or advocacy work.

One of the reasons I am such a ferocious opponent is I look much more soft, much more charming and congenial until my claws come out with untamed zest.

I wish to continue being fierce, being ferocious when I am an activist: usually my work is on behalf of special needs children, education in general and women’s rights/equality/consciousness issues. I love protesting while wearing a dress. Ever since I learned
the color for suffrage was yellow, I have wanted to get an extra frilly yellow dress to wear while I gather with my friends to protest, for example, violence against women.

I wish to grow courageously in my quest to “grow” my fierce and ferocious character.

Loving Samuel: My Son with Autism Means... Taking Small Steps in a Child-Centric Direction

Yesterday Emma invited her choir friend to our home so she could give her some vocal coaching. It was awesome to hear her encouragement of her friend and actually hear the improvements as they worked together for nearly two hours.

When I drove the friend home, a red flag waved before me once again.

She talked about the Middle School she attended. It is the Middle School some of Samuel’s IEP team has mentioned for him to attend next year. During our last IEP meeting I suggested Samuel attend sixth grade in his current school, since he is doing fine in his current mainstream situation, why move him to another school for sixth grade?

I agreed to visit the school and talk to the principal, but I hesitate to share with her everything I have heard. I continue to have a difficult time trusting educrats, even with all the experience I have now had in working with them.  I recognize Middle School is the most challenging time socially for all kids. Maybe I should just agree to a Special Day Class – but I worry he will regress and then won’t make it to Gen Ed in high school and then won’t be able to transition successfully to college.

He is smart enough to attend college someday. His eldest sister is at a Seven Sister college three thousand miles from home. His middle sister is a freshman in high school in honors classes. While I don’t expect him to follow exactly in their footsteps, I know he has the capabilities intellectually.

I find myself hesitating to label what I am feeling.

I am feeling frightened, concerned for my son, and projecting way too far into the future.

Maybe instead of worrying about the meeting with the educrat, I simply need to schedule the meeting first. Maybe instead of worrying about the milieu of the school I should visit it first from as open a mind as possible. Maybe instead of worrying about the level of academics I should visit the classroom and see for myself.

I never worried this much for Samuel’s neurotypical sisters. He has autism. They don’t have autism. My worry may or may not be completely warranted.

Love means I want the best for my child, not just the getting by for my child.

It also means taking his education one step at a time. More than likely we will take  smaller steps than I took with my daughters. That doesn’t make it wrong, it simply is taking smaller steps.

I am grateful Emma’s sweet friend waved the red flag, because it reminds me to take the steps I most need to take rather than getting distracted and finding myself in May without any sort of plan or strategy.

Love means I am become more aware so that is exactly the small step I am taking now.

It Doesn't Get Much Sexier Than This: How to Move Beyond Blather Into Word-Love #amwriting

I wrote this last Saturday night as I massaged the writing moments I had at hand while wishing I would be more productive. Writing isn't a straight line of deep insights or brilliantly combined words.

Sometime it is a matter of simply enjoying and being where you are with your words.

Take a seat and sit with me as I create word-love, free flow style, in the moment, on a February Saturday night. No corrections have been made in the hopes of keeping the process at the forefront:

I am sitting at my desk on a Saturday night wearing sweatpants with a cup of chamomile tea by my side. It doesn’t get much sexier than this, except maybe later when I fall asleep before my children do, all snuggled in with a book with an entire full bed to myself.

I have a ridiculously over scheduled week ahead of me, so I figure I better take the rest of this weekend as quietly as possible.

It helps that I can’t find my phone.

I also feel minorly blocked.

Being one who rarely runs out of topics to write about, tonight I sat at the keyboard nearly silent and quite freaked out by the silence. Me? Silent? Here? Now? Impossible!

But I am.

I could write about

Samuel’s protectiveness of the dogs.

Yet another blathering about all things poetic.

Perhaps mothering a teenager who is getting more and more mature.

My love for San Francisco, Concord, Boston?

Missing my friends who have made the mass exodus to Portland?

Sure, I could write about these things. But right now, I am not at all moved by these things.

So I try the test mile idea:

I think about Improv writing, plucking words and phrases and slices of somethings to make into another something. I wonder if I can find a prompt that unearths something, anything, beyond blather (overusing the word, twice in so few words. Try a synonym for blather: chatter prattle nattering drivel… wow, those sounds are almost like onomatopoeias. What would a room of people saying each of these five words sound like?)

Chatter blather prattle nattering drivel. I spoke them aloud, laughing at the sounds they created.

My father would abhor a room full of people speaking such utterances. Such a thing would make him definitely get up and leave the room and just possibly curse me under his breath as he went.

I delight in it. Let me try a different combination.

Prattle chatter blather drivel nattering.

What is drivel nattering?

I think many young women with their uptalking voices are actually drivel nattering.

I think many of the contestants currently on ABC’s Reality Show the Bachelor are actually driveling natterers.

I want to find something to watch. Looking for shows. Ridiculous. I want to be passively fed some prattle blather nattering drivel chattering.

Ridiculous or cool: My writing about the five word bouquet of natter chatter drivel blather prattle.

WordGeek or Wordlover? Read my highly technical, specialize words that only a certain segment of the population, my niche, will be attracted to reading. I’ll be pre-sifting my future perfect customers!

Fanciful or just plain stupid: My writing about polka dots, rainbows and unicorns is much like a little girls birthday party, not at all like the usual natter chatter drivel blather prattle or is it?

Writing of any kind manages to push me from unproductive to something, which is better than nothing. And besides, I have fallen in love with my word collection of the day: natter chatter drivel blather prattle.

#SOCSunday: Mothering & Creating in this Season of My Life... P.S. I didn't truly answer the prompt! >> smiles<<

Today’s Stream Of Consciousness Sunday Writing Prompt:

Define the season of your life at this very moment.

Here we go…

I expected it, my life, to be different than it is, but isn’t that true of every season of my life so far?

Once I left college and the “pre-programming” of the march through an education, things sort of meandered away on their own. I did the expected climb the corporate ladder, get a great job with fab benefits, drive the company car, buy the house. And then when my first daughter was stillborn when I was 28 all bets were off. Life continued.

I stayed my mostly optimistic self, but there have been more dark moments than I would have planned. Now I even relish those dark moments as hallmarks of growth and development, both personally and spiritually. I wouldn’t actually choose them, though. Who in her right mind says, “I choose stillbirth, I choose depression, I choose more than one hundred consecutive days of crying”? Not me.

Here I am, in this season. Emma is a freshman in high school. Right this moment she is having a friend over for a singing lesson. This is a change, a very positive change. She has hosted several friends this year, even after a very rocky start in school. She was homeschooled for 7^th and 8^th grade after a tumultuous 6^th grade year.

The first week of high school was tough to say the least. She cried four of the five days, horrified she would never find friends and never fit in.

She hung in there and now is very happy at school. She is a hit on the student newspaper, being the only freshman whose photo accompanies her monthly column. Most importantly, other kids like her and seek her out.

Last year at this time Samuel was floundering in his fourth grade class. He has high functioning autism and until then, had flourished in a general education setting.  He was miserable, also crying almost daily, only his was a silent, hidden crying. He suffered in his previous school until early May  until we transferred him to a school closer to home with a high functioning autism program.

It didn’t fit him because he was too high functioning for it, but the hope was the milieu of the campus itself would be better. Early in fifth grade we transitioned him back into a mainstream setting. He is doing well, there. He is liked. He even represented his class in the school-wide spelling bee. He earned it over all his “normal” classmates.

I haven’t done much differently this season.

I took a nine-month-theater-sabbatical, but I am currently back at it with two shows opening Friday night. I have two matinees next Sunday. This is crazyness! By Sunday night, I will crawl into bed and perhaps sleep until Tuesday. I would if I could!

February 26 #ROW80 Check In ~ Nitty Gritty Down & Dirty Telling on Myself

I realized as I sat down to write this Sunday update I much prefer doing my Wednesday check ins which are more topical and “here’s how much fun I am having with writing” compared to Sunday which is when I give an accurate account of what is working/what isn’t working with my devotion to writing.

Lately I have felt so much in the “not working” category, perhaps this is why I hesitate. With that in mind, I realize after next Sunday, I will have seven extra hours a day (plus, actually) open up for me in which to gather my thoughts, put words on the page, etc.

I am remembering why I loved taking a sabbatical from theater.

I am remembering why I am going back on sabbatical when these two shows are over!

So – away we go.

Writing/Craft

Write: Morning Pages Daily: I have not been writing first thing in the morning, but I do get in my stream-of-consciousness writing, perhaps not three pages, but close to that, daily. Hoping when I am back to going to sleep at a normal hour waking up and writing will also fall back into its normal flow.

Early in February I wrote about living this question (and writing this question) on a nearly daily basis as well as working on my personal 30 days of Self Forgiveness project.

Here is the question:

Am I willing to take the risk of giving my life “as it is now” up so that I may experience a different flavor of bliss~ an unnamed hunger I have never had and have not been willing to even long to experience?

Both have gone well – I will be coming up with another question and personal 30 day project for March as well. I found this process to be very fruitful even as  I was willing to not be overly tough on myself.

M-F: write 500 on my novel-in-progress. I have been sucking on this goal. I have written 500 words on ny novel-in-progress two of the last five days. I wrote a snippet today and realized, “See? When you write this it doesn’t suck completely!” I just need to focus. (Once again, when the theater insanity is over, things will feel much, much calmer and I will feel much, much calmer and my words will come more easily again.

Also, “And Then Came” series is moving though not as lustily as I would like. I want to re-work this goal in March – and perhaps I have just thought of something? Hmmm. I will play with this in my mind before then. I adore this concept and what I have gleaned/written is good. It is important. I just haven’t given it the attention it deserves.

I attempted to go to my poetry critique group this morning but there was an emergency there so it was cancelled. I was grateful I prepared for it, though, including double reads of my poem since I have learned what they tend to pick pick pick about my poems. I just don't want to hear the stupid (to me) comments about punctuation or capitalization.

(See also Under social media )- Post at least 5 blog posts weekly. It is improving, I am happy to say, but still not up to where I was in December. Not even close. I hate to sound so ridiculously competitive, but I believe after this week… blah blah blah….

Read: Weekly ~ read One chapter each:

One craft book and one “fun to read” book (either fiction or Memoir).

The Making of a Story by Alice LaPlante is so very good. I worked through Chapter 3 and immediately applied some of the exercises with some of my students. Invaluable

When I finished Traveling with Pomegranates by Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor I was so proud of myself. I am now reading Wild Unrest, a biography of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Loving it, also.

Creativity as a Practice: Double rehearsals are making me crack a bit. From 6:30 PM until at least 12:30 am this week is about as stretched as I could ever imagine being….wow. By this time next week I may be mumbling “I think I can I think I can” and two weeks from now I will be dancing a jig saying “I knew I could I knew I could I knew I could!”

Social Media

Weekly: I’m getting better, as I reported above.

Biweekly:  I did not do SOCSunday this week – I was cavorting in San Francisco’s North Beach getting drunk on the Beat Poets. Seriously wondrous experience I wouldn’t trade for any writing because it fills my writing well SOOOO very full. I did make it to Wishcasting.

Daily: I have visited blogs, commented on blogs, tweeted, retweeted, said “Howdy DO!” and participated in the #teamsprinty activities as much as I can.

Finally, REMEMBER I WRITE BECAUSE I LOVE IT and… Word-love has the power to change the world. One sentence at a time, we are having a positive impact on this beloved planet.

It all starts when one-by-one we move our pencils….(I use pencil for any writing tool… pencil is the generic catch word I prefer!)

Shadows Crept Across the Wall & Everything Faded: #writecampaign

I read a post from my ROW80 Team Sprinty friend, Lena Corazon this morning. The tweet included Z"#writecampaign". Curious, I popped over to the site that hosts Write Campaign. I didn't realize I was too late to complete the challenge so I sat at my desk and wrote the requisite two hundred words.

I enjoted the outcome so I am posting them here, even though it is too late to be official in the challenge. You know, that's how writing is sometimes: you may miss the boat submission wise, but you know the words will come to serve you someday, even if it simply for the process of responding to the intricacies of each particular challenge.

Shadows crept across the wall in the early morning light, most often caused by the pine tree that lives alongside my porch, outside my kitchen window.

This was my favorite writing sanctuary for many years. Many years until October, when my eccentricity bothered my neighbor enough to complain about my “uncivilized” unporchly décor.

I know, not many people use living room easy chairs and meant-for-indoor furniture in their porch, but I never claim to be untamed.

Certainly my words are not.

From my perch upon the garage sale writing chair, I would watch the sunrise: orange, peach, mauve, palest baby blanket yellow. I would write, anything and everything: the battered 1940’s truck that drove passed each day at 6:40 am. Dogwalking neighborly friends. The Jay which visited my porch, so friendly, never shouting at me with a familiar screeching Jay Squawk.

Maybe it was the empty Samuel Adams bottle that did me in, or the laundry lines I put up to dry my art and journal paper that I meant to take down and never did. Maybe it was my prideful insistence on being myself when so many others don’t have the guts.

October first, it was removed.

Everything faded.

Mommy & Writing Me: Play Upon the Page, Even When Tired, for Inspiration

Two cups of coffee and my eye lids still feel like weights are upon them drooping more steadily by the minute.

I felt the compulsion to write, though, so here I sit, engaging with the page when the pillow calls out, “rest… time to nap… rest, rest, rest!”

So I write.

I attempt to get coherent thoughts on the page. I attempt to get  useful, coherent thoughts on the page. I attempt to get life changing words on the page.

Therein lies the power: it lives in the action of moving through the stages: from the thought of “an attempt” to actually acting, to actually doing what is intended originally.

My fingers move on the keyboard.

I seek inspiration in spite of the drooping eyes. I refill my coffee cup and picture in my mind’s eye people reading these words in a magazine or a blog softly nodding an affirmation to their computer monitors or stack of paper in their hands.

It’s funny, the conversations which stick to my mind the longest. Do you find any random conversations from years ago floating back into your consciousness?

One conversation I recall with surprising clarity was between me and one of my co-workers from the Mental Health department.  He was a psychologist who wore ill fitting suits and at one point, had fallen in love and left work at the county to relocate to the place his new love lived.

We were talking about calling in sick versus “powering through” a cold or similar affliction. I was feeling rather proud of myself for powering through a cold. He was more thoughtful about it, though, and shared his experience with resting rather than being a health renegade. For whatever reason, this conversation sticks through my remembrance clearly.

I wonder whatever happened to him?

My mind is meandering down paths other than what are coming off the tips of my fingers.

My mind is so befuddled, I took my daughter’s medicine this morning. Perhaps this is why my eyelids are so insistent upon closing. I wonder momentarily if I ought to take some medicine tonight to help me fall asleep. The only problem with that is waking up when the time is ripe and the day must begin and I must ring out my “this is Mommy me bell” whether I feel up to it or not.

There is no choice involved with that happenstance. The clock ticks on & Mommy on and within it all, I continue to choose to write, even in random forms like this one.

Denise Chavez, playwright and novelist, said, “Writing is play. If we forget that spirit of play, it’s very sad. Writing should be joyful.” I agree, even when eye-lids are heavy and momentum is dropping, I choose joy and word~love to guide my pencil, my pen, my fingers on the keyboard.

Embracing writing as the "place to play right now" leads us back to our opening words from Denise Levertov:

I heard was my whole self
saying and singing what it knew: I can.

3 Simple Tips to Managing Your Home (and Work from Home) with Passion and Efficiency

I usually don’t get to the keyboard this early. Usually I am still doing “kid schlep” duties and then it takes me a bit to settle into a time of focus here, at the keyboard.

This morning is different, though. I am arranging my schedule differently this morning. It is mostly good.

Don't Listen to the Dishes in the sink: another excuse to turn my back on business expansion.

My mind is attempting to take away my focus me by remembering the dishes stacked close to the sink and the laundry waiting to be put away. I will get those done, but I need to nurture my love affair with words soon. The fact that my writing office is in my living room and it may appear I have all this “extra time” on my hands is wholly inaccurate.

I fill my time rather efficiently compared to the average person. When I am really serious – perhaps even today – I will fill my time blocks in thirty minute chunks. When I do this, I become a virtual whirlwind of activity.

Thirty minutes of writing followed by 30 minutes of dusting/vacuuming followed by 30 more minutes of writing followed by thirty minutes of marketing followed by thirty minutes of follow up phone calling followed by thirty minutes doing any extra detailed cleaning in my children’s rooms.   

Work with your "to do" list rather than your "to do" list working you.

It isn’t rocket science, but between social media, the relentless buzz of my phone telling me “TEXT HAS ARRIVED” (and my subconscious mind says “oh, must be urgent and take away from everything else I am doing!) and one of my children or friends nudging me with some sort of “must be done yesterday” request, it takes fortitude to keep up one of my days of relentless time-chunking.

I realize now that when I sat down to write, this was going to be just a free flow writing moment. It turned into something that will most likely become a blog post. I did that without even trying.

Here are three simple suggestions to make you more productive:

1. Use the timer on your cell phone or stove to small chunks of time. Even fifteen minute chunks may net a lot of productivity. Don’t declare, “I have no timer so I can’t follow these oh-so-simple suggestions!” You do have at least one timer. Use it.
2. Make a list of tasks to fit into the chunks, but don’t be overly rigid about which chunk when. Unavoidables (like the school calling and asking you to pick up your sick child) happen. Rather than give up your entire day, do like your GPS: reroute without complaint.
3. I learned this as a waitress: never waste a trip when passing through a room or hallway. Look for items that belong elsewhere or that can be tossed. It takes almost no time and believe me, it makes a big difference.

I simply blended focus with a finite amount of time and sprinkled my passion for life in splatters across everything and here I am with increased productivity.

Wednesday #Wishcasting: The Choice-filled Wish to Spend Time Consciously

Jamie Ridler and her wishcasting community sometimes read my mind with their weekly prompting:

Today: How do you wish to spend your time?

I have often said, “I am friends with time, I stretch it… rarely run out of it and love the games I play to enjoy leveraging her….”

Then there are times like right now, when my time is like play-doh: flattened and pulled and shaped into long strings, a sort of blobby silly string impression….

I actually don’t mind this, occasionally. It makes me feel incredibly alive: this consciously having a full schedule. I think that is the key: I want to spend my time consciously.

After a nine month break from theater I am doing two productions at the same time. One show runs at 7:30 in the evening and the other runs at 11:00 pm. This also means rehearsals run from 6:30 pm to usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 12:30 pm.

I am so fired up and energized by rehearsing that I frequently have difficulty falling off to sleep. I would rather continue singing and creating and laughing than getting rest. I’m aware of this so I schedule naps. I am conscious of how time interacts with my mood.

I wish to be conscious with how I spend my time.

When my rehearsal schedule (or travel or publishing schedule) is heavy, I am exceptionally conscious of every moment with my children. There are debates about quality vs. quantity time: I know it isn’t perfect and I know my children are happier when I am happier. Sometimes that means I leave the house to rehearse and perform in front of an audience.

I have been conscious with how I spend my time and my wish is to continue and improve my level of consciousness in how I invest my time.

It is such a precious resource.
