Do you ever have those mornings where your racing thoughts are an effectively jarring alarm clock?
I had that experience today.
I woke up, went about my business and as I was driving they started again, hammering yammering, thoughts bumping elbows to get my attention.
I took a moderately deep breath and chose to take notice of what scenery was surrounding me rather than listen to the incessant internal whining.
I noticed some of the deciduous trees on Alta Vista Drive were turning slight oranges and yellows. I noticed some of my neighbors had planted winter rye which was thriving in its bright, vivid, "notice me notice me notice ME" shade of green. I saw the stately, tall sycamores close to Green Frog market whose leaves looked as if they were just giving up. No colorful display, just a brown withering. They were succumbing to lack of water and would soon opt to give themselves over and return to the Earth.
I felt my tightened muscles release as I continued driving.
It was an almost instant shift in mindset because I simply chose to see what was present and stopped concerning myself with worry, doubt and the relentless cascade of "to do's" and "should do's" and "why haven't you finished?"
Instead, I chose almost ridiculous green and aging leaves and surprising yellows and reds.
Where are your thoughts today?
Look out your window.
Take a breath.
What do you see?
Now look again, what is there that you hadn't noticed before?
Notice what is there that you hadn't noticed before this precise moment.
In your mind, "write" what you see.
If you feel compelled, write what you see on a piece of paper or into a twitter update or into a document you may elect to turn into something later.
Give yourself space and permission to turn from what is bothering you and turn into the beauty that always surrounds you, that has been waiting for you to notice and to join in quiet, mindful celebration.
Gabriela Mistral, a poet from Chile, reminds us, "“Love beauty; it is the shadow of God on the universe." Take some moments today - especially when you are feeling taxed or tired, and note the beauty in front of you, beside you, behind you.
I opened the front door this morning and said aloud, "Look at how pretty and how interesting the sky is." It was a combination of baby blanket blue and baby blanket pink. Soft, too, in texture. Almost like looking on the inside of a fleece sweatshirt.
I could have rushed through the door but I am grateful I chose to see the simple beauty of the sky.
Now it is your turn to see the beauty - your beauty - and love it.
