Journey of a different sort from Gwen Bell’s Blog Challenge:
December
19 Car ride. What
did you see? How did it smell? Did you eat anything as you drove there? Who
were you with?
The Road trip of the Summer of 09 will always
be remembered as a transformative one – exhilarating, heart breaking,
connective and filled with laughter, tears, and the discovery of new places.
I feel, at times, like I have
exhausted this topic in my art and in my writing. Blahdy blah, I think. Boring,
I think. Who wants to hear me ramble on and on and on again AGAIN about our
trip that ended suddenly.
Today, I will write
differently.
I have a secret love affair
for AAA guidebooks. In this age of Mapquest and GPS devices, there is something
for holding an old-school paper map so you can follow your path exactly and see
the entirety of your day on the highway AND read from a handy-dandy guidebook
about the cities you meet along the way.
I remember driving in
Our guidebooks helped us to get where we were going and since we elected not to separate from one another through using Ipods or handheld electronic devices, we were left to chat and laugh about the characters we met in guidebooks, come up with the “what about this or that?” or write haiku, collaboratively, as we fell more deeply in love with each other and the landscape.
