John Irving asks himself before beginning to write a book:
“What do I want my last sentence to be?”
Watch him talk about his process, and then stick around to hear more about my process of gathering my life in 2009 into a simple catch phrase…
I have been participating in Gwen Bell’s Best09 Blog Challenge – we are recounting 2009 and I have been working on my “Catch Phrase” for 2009. I have been fumbling, ambling… and curiosity about how to narrow an entire year filled with more life than many of the huge life filling preceding years – how could I unfold this catch phrase.
John Irving said, “He felt the great adventure of his life was just beginning.”
For twenty years you waited for that?
And as you heard, then came up with more:
“As his father must have felt….”
I just spent a few minutes on a teleclass bridge line with a group of friends, scooping up the contents of a day of productivity. One of my friends listened to an audio I made about this very topic – what my year has encompassed and said “I wish you could deliver that to groups of 5,000 women all over the country.”
I think all my meandering has come up with a catch phrase – one which is the title of a book whose table of contents I wrote and never finished back before Samuel was born:
2009 – The Year of Passionate Detachment
And now, what are the last words I will speak in 2009?
What are the last words I will write?
