Increased Abundance: It's Only a Thank You Away

I hear it regularly. Usually it sounds something like this: "What is the most effective way to increase both abundance and riches,both spiritual and physical, for myself and for the rest of the world?"

The key to opening the door, allowing the floodgates of abundance to widen is exceptionally simple.

Recently I have been working with a process which makes me
repeatedly consider what I would want to accomplish if I had a limited time left to live. It calls into question what I would change or do differently before *poof* my active time of contribution was complete.

I realized I could live this way all the time without concern about my current project or mode of creative expression and live a deeper, richer, more abundant life no matter what.

Last week I felt in the need of an increase in abundance, especially in energy as the week work on. I was in Tech Week: the final week before "Into the Woods", a very complex musical in which I had a significant role, Emma had a crisis in school and I was still running my business and household as usual.

To describe the week as "long" wouldn't say it with enough ferocity.

Perhaps "interminable" or "unending" or "as vast and dry as the Sahara" would be a better way to describe it.

When Sunday afternoon arrived my energy was simultaneously higher than a kite and running on empty. I knew there was one person I did not want to forget to thank before the week was gone forever.

I approached Emily, who owns the theatre where I am currently appearing in "Into the Woods" and said, "I just wanted to say thank you for building this place. With out it, I wouldn't be where I am…I would never have had the courage to perform."

She smiled and answered, "And you do a very good job."

I countered, "And once again, my performance would not exist if you didn't have the foresight and desire to build this theatre. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you."

Emily's face filled with warmth and a quiet, satisfied joy. "You just made my day."

Her theatre has made a significant contribution to my life. It was absolutely worth my investment in a two minute conversation to compliment her. Expressing gratitude is one way to learn the joy of
giving AND receiving, another key to experiencing abundance.

As I expressed heartfelt, true gratitude in to Emily, she gave back to me by complimenting me.

Remembering this brief exchange, I wondered how often I have missed opportunities to thank the people who have had an impact on my life,noth tangibly and intangibly? Life is simply too short to not offer gratitude to the people whose life, whose work, whose contribution
in some way assisted you in your journey.

Living a lifestyle of active and continual gratitude is a key to receiving abundance, to leave behind scarcity and struggle and finally experience true richness of spirit. It doesn't guarantee you will always experience a clear path. It does, however, change how you respond to those bumps which may appear. Being sincerely thankful and expressing that thanksgiving will enliven you more than
anything you have ever imagined.

One of my favorite holiday greeting cards this year came from an elderly widow. I hadn't received a Christmas greeting from her since I was in elementary school.

This year was different purely because I was able to find her and communicate my gratitude for the lessons she taught me more than 35 years ago. Did my delayed expression of thanks mean anything to her?

What do you think?

Don't wait to express your gratitude. Do it now. Make a list of people to thank. Then start the process. Write handwritten notes, make phone calls, send emails, send flowers and gift certificates. Pen a testimonial, write a letter to the editor, craft a poem or a picture or throw a pot.

Beginning the Journey together, April 11, 2005

I Was Looking Forward, and Now I Am Just Looking Tired....

I was looking forward to this time – today – for several reasons.

One was that I would be done with the drama presentation for Easter at Church. I felt like this was a big challenge. I hadn’t acted seriously at church before – I had only done a children’s Christmas musical – which is acting…. Nonetheless, this play “At the Bridge” was heavy duty.

There were many times I said, “I really don’t want to do this!” and yet, I did – after all, who am I to turn down a divine appointment that includes public performance?  Certainly not me.

Despite a first service sound challenge (My mic actually fell into my jacket – ha! Things went well. I got lots of very positive feedback for my performance including, things like "That is the most real church play I have ever seen." and "I totally forgot you two were actors" and "I forgot you were Julie - I was feeling so bad for you up there."  (That one made me laugh!)

One older lady said to me, "Wow, we have professional actors here."  Well, it is true - I have gotten paid for acting.

It is intriguing – even in reading my words today, they look tired. I need to have a “Calgon, take me away moment” – or perhaps drink a bit of water or run the stairs. I think I’ll go drink water.

Count down until rehearsal tomorrow. I am so excited about it – that will keep me going, too!

"You Like Me, You Really, Really Like Me!"

Please bear with me as I am having

my own Sally Fields moment.

Yesterday morning I awakened to no

call about “It Runs in the Family.”  I figured,

well, the woman might have thought I was

marvelous, but the Director must have

thought differently. No role.

It was a weird, slightly sad feeling.

I had wiped away tears on the train the day before, waiting

restlessly for the call which was supposed to

come on Sunday.  I even wrote in my notebook,

“What are these tears about?”

They are most reminiscent, I think, to the months

and months and months when I experienced infertility.

All that time “trying” and “doing everything right

with no results” – it was a horrible time for me. My

recent period of auditioning and getting parts I didn’t

want… or not auditioning when perhaps it would

have been wise to audition… or auditioning and

getting no call at all… had left me feeling sore, sad

and very similar to how I felt when I was infertile.

It was a barren, unattractive, somehow-I-must-be-

not-quite-a-woman feeling.

Fast forward to the afternoon and there I stood with Mom,

having a day akin to a Treasure Trove.  We were standing

side by side overlooking the

harbor, idly

watching the boats coming in when my cell phone

rang from an unfamiliar number.

“Hmmmm, I wonder?” I thought.

It was Rob Long, “It Runs in the Family” Director. He

had an offer for me.

Rosemary. The philandering David’s wife.  I heard

myself saying “Sure, that sounds like a blast. I

would love to do it!”

So it took a while to get the perfect part this time – and

once again I am fulfilling goals almost inadvertently.  I

have come full circle and will be up on the boards at

Stars Dinner Theatre in a month and a day.

Ahhhh – yes.  Life is grand.

She said, “You are marvelous.” Or something like that....

or to dream a new dream.

“You are marvelous.” Or something like that. She
said something like that, not sure what – but I
heard something like that spring from her lips.

I almost missed her compliment.

I was auditioning, once again, and thoroughly
enjoyed the way-too-brief-for-me reading. I
prefer auditions where I get to read over and
over again with different combinations of
people. I absolutely adore auditioning and
would like them to go on and on and
on and on.

The audition took place in the room where I
had my first voice lessons more than two years
ago now. I remember the first time I sang alone
for Amber I cried – I was so happy to be doing
what I wanted to do… something I had never
done at that level.

It was like admitting a long-kept secret.

“I want to sing.”  And what came to be “I want
to perform.”

Rob asked me when I finished, “Do you have
any questions?”

I shook my head no and said, “Do you have
any more questions for me?”

He cocked his head slightly and said, “Do you
have anything you would like to tell me?”

A torrent of words flew from my mouth.

I told of my heart’s desire to be in another
show – I shared my passion for theatre and
how the love of performance started right in
this very room with Amber O’Reilly in voice
class… I shared my love of British Farce… I
shared my authentic “this-is-me-love-me-or-
leave-me-at-least-I-gave-you-all-of-me”
message.

I don’t know if I am a part of this Director’s
vision for this particular show. I know I would
love to do it – and I know if I am not cast, it
is simply “I am not cast for this particular
show at this particular time.”

And it sure would feel good to be in a show
at a new theatre with a new director – and
to use my British accent… and to do this
brand of Farndale-esque comedy?

It would be, like that unknown-named woman
said, “marvelous”.

Today, March 20, 2005 - I am grateful for....

Today I am grateful for....

The fresh, spring feeling in the air following a glorious
rain-fall.

The fact that I am going to go to Orange County
today - and will see my mother and my brother and
will spend a couple hours loafing by the ocean.

My ability to create

That Cuckoo's Nest is OVER!!!!

a compliment about my acting from a complete
stranger yesterday - "You are marvelous!"

Sam's adorable first skating lesson yesterday - I
am so blessed with the most amazing children.

Emma's tenacity and very, very strong drive to
learn whatever is in front of her nose in that
moment.

Katherine's gentle spirit and sage wisdom - and
the fact that she is going to be doing "Island of
Anyplace" with me... how cool to hear her say
to her friend, "I am going to get paid for each
show! I am going to get paid to do what I love
to do!!"

YES! She is getting it!! My kid!!!

I am grateful for my body - this precious, beautiful
wrapping for my soul.

And I am grateful for you, who are reading these
words. May your day be filled with the simple
and awe-inspiring power of gratitude.

You know, as I was walking in this beautiful
clear weather today, I remembered this quote
from Henry Ward Beecher - and smiled to
think of how Gratitude is so much like Spring.

"Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs
from the soul."

Manifesting Hugs

I have been barely able to breathe the last couple
days. Doing a little of this, a lot of that, some more
of this. I collapsed into my bed at about 9:00 PM
last night - feeling every ounce of my age.

I have several new programs launching next
week - and I am longing for - actually, collaborating
with the Divine to manifest another Lap Top.

I will be in Dana Point and riding in the train on
Sunday and I keep thinking "Sheesh, if I only
had a Lap Top" because I can do the work
on notebooks and pencil and pen stuff, but
then I have to transcribe it and OHHHH WOEEE
ISSSSS MEEEEEEEEEE!!!"

Tonight is my last stint as Sound Operator for
"Cuckoo's Nest" and I am going to do a PERFECT
job.

I can't believe how happy I am to be almost done.
This is the first time I have been excited to be
DONE with a particular theatre task.

Hey - life is full of new experiences.

Also tomorrow - the children and I are starting
skating lessons AGAIN. We haven't done
them in years, but now my little Emma is
looking forward to them... so I am, too.

Let's see how Sam does.

Speaking of Sam, he is walking in the door right
now - my shortest blessing on two feet.

It is cold here in Bakersfield today - well, cold for
us. It was 55 degrees Fahrenheit when we made
our way home from Arvin for our "Island of
Anyplace" performance.

I sent an email a moment ago to a group
of friends and I said, "I sure could use
a hug!" I am going to work on manifesting
a couple of those tonight.

What? You? How?

I was re-reading an earlier entry in my morning pages notebook - I opened it randomly because I just felt like I was supposed to post something here, in my Unplugged Blog.

I came across this note I wrote about Devon being shocked that I had been suicidal in the past.

Here goes nothing.

Recently - some one - Devon... said, "How? You? Suicidal? No, I never ever would have thought that from you."

Yes, it is true.

I have a tale to tell.

Once upon a time I was a woman who lost everything that meant anything to her.  I became disatisfied and didn't want to continue anymore. I only wanted to sleep, leave the sadness behind.

"It's the this, it's the that" I lamented.

"It's the heart, It's the heart, It's the heart."

Marlena, Marlena, Marlena.

I want someone, anyone, to sing her song to me.

Once upon a time, I was a woman who no longer wanted to live.

And once upon a time, I chose life. I said "Yes."

And I continued to live, ever after.
