My friend, Tess Kincaid, tagged me in a five day poetry challenge. This is Day five (of five) and once again I opted to write new. I am linking to an older poem as well. The poem I selected to bring back is Unbirth. It was written in 2010. I had forgotten it even existed.
Whirr of the fan sweeps residual heat from the room,
she watches it move -
back and forth and forth and back and back
and forth and again and again and again
before she remembers last night is how it feels to not be afraid
maybe this overwhelming tiredness is the last vestiges of letting go
of turning and spinning and dervish dancing
she didn't know wanted to pivot plus
more breath fills chest and seeps out in the
spaces between the fear and the
new feeling, still wobbly, as she realizes
the bookends are flimsy paper replicas
of how restful nights before the clattering once felt
dogs bark about the invisible, the fans whirr more
her fingers flex and stretch in her lap
she continues to pray, anyway,
nevertheless, in any event.....

I hope you enjoyed these last five poems and if you haven't, look back to see the other poems that were born - and the old faithfuls trotted back out -
to see where the poetry muse
takes us on this adventure, thanks to Tess Kincaid. She is, by the way,
responsible for Magpie Tales, which is the place I
look for weekly poetry prompting. Check her out this Sunday and
write along with the community there.
