Poem inspired by this photo by Elene Usdin found on Magpie Tales - and I am so glad to have found it. Love the imagery it inspired and the story it asked me to tell.
I recognize that suitcase
that more than slightly worn spot
on the carpet
the chip the chink the chew marks
on the bedside table you last
left my high ball glass, half full
half empty half whatever
as you asked me to leave
and pushed me
using the propeller at the small
of my back
thus beginning
my lessons
in resilience
in letting go
in finally saying
for once and for all
(or so I say but never
seem to do)
goodbye
