Thank you, Tess, for a perfect visual to take me away - its been such a wistful weekend. This could not have been any more perfect.
the sky is grey
i'm drinking coffee
Peter, Paul and Mary
sing of puffs and planes and winds, blowing
the air smells like cement
made wet by a hot summer sprinkling
and there’s nothing to do but wonder
where was I when oranges were a penny
and beech nut was a chewing tobacco not a gum?
kisses went missed or unnoticed in my once
encyclopedic memory
dawn’s come and go and I forget which
smile came with the peachy train call or
tell the difference between the lavender holding
of the baby birds, opening their beaks
to my poetry or wait, just wait, just wait - -
waiting to come up with the just right words instead of the
garbled holding pattern that appears.
never convenient.
let it begin again. Kim, on guitar, singing. (sounding foreign)
go ahead, sing it again. ghzet was how it sounded to my
little girl ear, almost sleeping
thin blanket on the assigned green camping cot
if I stayed awake just a little bit longer
this will go on forever
for this brief cup of coffee and
time, fingers on the keyboard -
first verse, again and again and again
grapefruit is a nickel

Wow. I really enjoyed reading this and the last line was the perfect ending.

Beautiful! Very wistful. You perfectly conveyed that sense of nostalgia the photograph suggests.
