I don't usually mix my writing prompts. Call me a prompt purist. But after writing an entire, heartful, "I love being different and this is what makes me attractive!" blog post for Reverb10 I realized it was decent and true to a point AND it was a cop out.
I couldn't look myself in the mirror if I didn't at least begin to discuss beauty in our world, in our society - and how that impacts our thoughts and behavior.
This simple poem is just a very short beginning. The images are some of my favorite self portraits that may be seen as anything BUT beautiful.
Perfect that the words from Three Word Wednesday were the perfect companions for this trip down the road marked beautiful.
This week's three words:
judge, nightfall, safety
The Road Marked Beautiful
Who am I or you or he or she
to judge "beautiful"?
I climbed into the safety
of different, not concerned with
symmetrical or alluring or
foxy-fetching-fascinating
I knew in the darkness of
nightfall my voice may deceive
Who am I or you or he or she
to judge "beautiful"?
Highly honed skills may rise above
winsome features in complete darkness
Since when is "pleasant" visually intoxicating
or ideal anything but sleep inducing
Who am I or you or he or she
to judge "beautiful"?
This cloak, this one over here is more
intriguing, more awakening, more advantageous
I would rather have a slice of engaged truth
or depth of emotion or sliced through without
self consciousness as my beautific
synonyms
Who am I or you or he or she
to judge "beautiful"?

Love this. Especially the line "I climbed into the safety of different."

"The safety of different" was the killer line for me, as well. Nicely done.

As the young people of today would say, "THIS!"
Freakin' brilliant, Julie. Asks far more questions than it answers, yet it gets the ball rolling. Love this.

who am I?
