Oh, Thom fills me with joy when I see the words he offers us to write with at Three Word Wednesday. I haven't posted what I have written for the past couple weeks so I was very excited, today, to write a poem so quickly and effortlessly from: Clutch, Delight, Happy
This poem has its roots in a recent experience of mine, even though this was written in third person I will confess this is all about me.
:-)
This weekend I performed in a musical production on one of the larger theater spaces in Bakersfield. I had wanted to be in a musical for as long as I can remember. I hadn't done a musical in years. I had done more than thirty straight plays, a couple films, some music videos but musicals remained elusive. Well, I filled in for people in roles I never would have taken except friends needed extra singers, so being me, I agreed to join.
What I longed for was what I had in the beginning of my return to stage and wasn't able, for whatever reason, to get now that I had so much more skill and so much more stage experience. Either I didn't want to even audition for a show because it didn't fit with my likes and dislikes or my schedule was out of whack or there were no character roles fitting for me or I would audition and never hear a word from the Director.
I wanted a decent character role who gets to sing: that was all.
For the second time in a year, I got a call when someone else - the first choice - dropped out. It isn't ever easy to be somewhere after first choice. You never actually know if you were second or eighteenth choice. This time, I didn't care if I was fifty seventh choice. It was a musical. I would play the villain. It doesn't get much better than that.
And the PS before the poem is, I got so many kudos for my performance I stopped counting.
That's me, next to the Sheriff... tied to my sister as we get thrown out of town... on a rail. What is not to love about musical theater?
Second String
Somehow she became the "Go-to" guy
Not the first choice but the first choice
when the first choice opts out
"Please please please, second
stringer, please please please..."
She is grateful the delight on her face
doesn't scamper across the cell
phone towers allowing this conversation
to take place (happy isn't enough to
describe it adequately)
Before the show was over
she rose to the clutch player position
Ever enthusiastic and upbeat
Her only tears came when it was over
And she was back to second string, again
Enjoyed your experiences and happy that you ultimately got what you desired!! This made a great read!! Loved it!! :) Hope you are back soon for more kudos!!

Ah, the second string. In the immediate it is always so frustrating but when you get to be first, you can use the experience to shine! Thanks for sharing this with us and congrats on the kudos!
