Today's And Now You Write theme:
Touch: with our hands, our skin, our emotions.
Prompt: What do you hold in your hand?
We start with a very simple question.
What do you hold in your hand?
Simple question indeed. Yes, it is. To
answer? It is perhaps not so simple.
Before rushing to an answer, let's pause
for a moment to consider our
hands - all of us across the globe -
together.
Use your eyes to visually inspect one
of your hands.
Really look at it for a moment – consider
it as if it was the first time you were seeing
it. What do you notice first? What do you
notice after looking at it for a while?
Let's take a moment of silence to really
witness our hand.
Your hand is an example of perfect,
divine proportion. Right in front of you,
right at the end of your arm – a beautiful
model of sacred geometry.
Your fingers – the humble servant of
the hand, stand at attention, waiting for
your command. Your fingers are
very sensitive because you find out
a lot about things by feeling with them
and with the rest of your hands.
Take a moment to wiggle your fingers.
According to an article from Johns Hopkins
Magazine, our fingertips have about 3,000
touch receptors each. The trunks of our
bodies have about the same amount of
receptors as just one fingertip!*
Take a moment to really look at your fingertips.
3,000 touch receptors on each finger?
15,000 touch receptors on that hand you are
openly admiring.
As writers, our hands are precious
commodities – they are literally our
partners in creativity. We craft with
them whether we write directly onto
the keyboard or hold a pencil or
paint brush, our hands are one
of the primary tools of our craft.
The sense of touch is different from
the other senses in that your entire
body is involved in giving and
receiving touch. This is very cool
AND today – remember, our hands
are the stars of this lesson.
Shape your hand into a cup and pour
that fact into the center of your hand.
"Hand, in your fingers alone you
have 15,000 touch receptors."
Hold that in your hand…. and heart.
"Hand, you are a model of sacred
geometry"
Hold that in your hand….. and heart.
Hand, you are an example of perfect,
divine proportion."
Hold that in your hand….. and heart.
Take a moment to touch the inside
of your body – touch your heart –very
gently with your breath. Open in gratitude
to the new discoveries you are making,
that wellspring of emotion when you
recognize something for the very
first time – this time it is recognizing
the wonder of and giftedness
of your hand.
Remember our initial question?
What does your hand hold?
Does it hold wonder, beauty, openness,
justice, pleasure, power, growth, awareness?
Does it hold connections, a profession,
does it hold centering energy?
What does your hand hold?
Prepare to write:
Georgia O'Keefe said, "When you take
a flower in your hand and really look at it,
it's your world for the moment. I want to
give that world to someone else. Most
people in the city rush around so, they
have no time to look at a flower. I want
them to see it whether they want
to or not."
During our writing today, we are going
to make our wondrous hand our world
for the moment. Your hand holds
something within it – perhaps that
something isn't in tangible form…. Yet
… and one of the strongest ways to
manifest that "something" is to begin
to speak it into awakening through words.
Your prompt has two parts, almost like
you are in a self dialogue.
It goes like this:
What does your hand hold? My hand holds……..
What does your hand hold? My hand holds……..
