Interesting question today on Blogfest2012 from ToniLynn Cloutier. She asks: Do you think online college courses are worth the money?
I am actually considering doing a master’s program online to teach English as a Second Language. Both university’s offer on line courses with their regular faculty and the course content is the same as their campus content. I want to go online because of the convenience factor. There is an ESL program in our local university but it would take longer AND it would take me away from my kids in the evening - I don't want to do that!
I also teach classes via teleconference/email discussions. These are primarily writing classes, creativity classes, personal development classes I have developed myself. My students choose to be there and we have a great time. I don’t like teleclasses where you sit on the phone and there is no interaction.
My specialty is building community. I build community when I
teach/speak live as well. It’s just in
the blood. When investigating online classes, I think the student needs to do
the research to make sure it is a fit for him or her.
Just like any other college or post graduate education, some teachers are better than others. Right now my daughter is studying at University of Edinburgh for her semester abroad. Very presitigious place – and one of her three teachers is awful!
So, it happens.
No matter what the context, bad teachers & bad classes happen.
A shame, considering the investment we make.
