The
prompt this week from ReadWritePoem was a powerful one, and one which took a
respectable time of introspection surrounding the theme of what I believe and what I don't believe. I wrote about my process on my Julie
Unplugged blog . I thought it would be simple yet, it wasn't so simple. It might be worth your while to do the exercise even if you aren't interested in writing a poem from it.
I over wrote this poem at first and then settled in with just what I share, here. Shorter than my usual, perhaps – and I think it is just right.
Born
naked, belonging, identical uniforms
Him
with this, her with that, them with –
Otherwise
remarkably universal tags
Forever
stamped with a longing to return
To
some form of uncovered transparency
Where
by skin and in skin and with skin
Alone
we are adored, cuddled, held in
Agreement
with wide-eyed, sacred believing
Disbelief just because we are – nothing to do
Mirror face blinks, moist eyed, relieved

I love the physicality of this, Julie.
Where by skin and in skin and with skin
Alone we are adored, cuddled, held...
The life we have to live and love is embodied and encultured. I lovw this!

Yes, this poem is true for me at least: since birth I have somehow wanted to return to that paradise of being innocent, beloved, safe, adored, with no effort required of me. A feeling of "longing" for the perfect Eden of the womb, before knowledge of sin. Well-done.

This is beautiful -- and I have to admit, this reminds me of one of my own beliefs: that underneath the skin, underneath the differences, we are all looking for the same things. Thank you for sharing.

It is often so difficult to be in, and come to terms with so much.
Great words.

Aside from being a thoughtful and wistful piece, I just want to point out something about the structure: I really liked the triads. In several of the lines, there's this "X, and Y, and Z" pattern that I find really... complete? Comforting? I don't know. It fits well, though. ^_^

"Forever stamped with a longing to return
To some form of uncovered transparency"
That's what I try to explain to my wife when she complains about my relaxing in my Joe Boxer's... ;)
Nice work Julie!

You've articulated something I think many of us do long for. Really nice!

Am I permitted to say I like this poem without explaining why? I do. In a way it feels familiar, comfortable, like an old well worn glove, something you know, just because. Thank you Julie.

I love the idea of naked uniforms and universal tags!
