Today's lesson focuses on love, peace and
the light which comes as a result of loving peace.

Albert Einstein said "Creating a new theory is
not like destroying an old barn and erecting a
skyscraper in its place. It is rather like climbing
a mountain, gaining new and wider views, discovering
unexpected connections between our starting points
and its rich environment.  But the point from which
we started out still exists and can be seen, although
it appears smaller and forms a tiny part of our
broad view gained by the mastery of the obstacles
on our adventurous way up."

This sounds like what happens when we create
new pieces of word art, when we craft a new
story or article of book or simply write because
we want to awaken something within.

You may see awakening as being keenly alert.

A snippet from Julie's life:

I remember one specific, surprise awakening
when strolling through Barnes and Noble one
Saturday morning.  My eyes scanned the stacks
as I moved from one section to another when
I caught  the title of a book: Poetry.....
by Michelangelo?

While looking up a definition in a dictionary, I
happen past another definition: Zephyr. (a warm,
gentle breeze.) Never did I know its name though
I have felt its comforting as I always felt a Zephyr
was God whispering "Everything will be ok".

And wasn't Albert Einstein a Scientist? Reading
the above quote, I surmise he was also quite a
philosopher.

When we use free flow writing this ongoing
increased awareness happens, too. It is part
of writing that comes straight from our heart
through our pencil and onto the page in the
most surprising ways… when we are not
intending anything to happen beyond
loving the moment and permitting peace
to move through us and onto the page.

Yesterday the road stretched out before
us as we crisscrossed our home town.
Roads went nowhere and anywhere as we
  meandered along path from Northeast
Bakersfield to Oildale and back to Northeast
Bakersfield.

Out of the blue I had a thought: I could start
here in Bakersfield and drive literally anywhere
in both North and South America.

I could start here, today, and take a trip all
the way to Tierra del Fuego in South America
and then hop a ship to Antarctica.

If that was the true yearning of my heart, I
could do exactly that. My  possibilities were
limited only by the need to continually keep
the engine filled and maintained as we keep
our end goal in sight. Modifying, tweaking
and adjusting along the way we could
transverse the entire Pan American highway
from the frigid coldness of Alaska to the warmth
and jungles of Central and South America to
the familiar feeling climes of southern South
America to the frigid cold of the other side
of the world.

I could start that journey in this moment
from this place.  Right here. Right now. Just
as you can start the journey your heart is
yearning to take. Right here, right now.

The connection here?

When we choose to sit in a space of
joy and peace we allow ourselves to
circle freely. We are able to get from
Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and simply
learn along the way. We pick ourselves
up when we falter.

Instead of looking a  what is wrong with
the characters and roadblocks along the way,
we laugh and keep going.

This is also what we can choose with our writing.

Let's choose something besides pessimism
and self induced misery by being convinced
"Einstein's barn has fallen - oh no, heaven
help us!"

The facts are simple.

The barn isn't there anymore - oh well.  Let's
shift our perspective and aim towards possible
passion to vibrant passion we will be able to
see all the world is offering to us.

We can see – and write -  the skyscraper
(or museum, cathedral, home or bridge).  We
can see – and write - not only the roads
crisscrossing our home town, we can see
Alaska, North America, Central America,
and South America and Tierra del Fuego.

At the heart of the experience is your soul,
heartfully expressed.  You will become even
more intimate with your essence. You will
hear the beat of your internal drum and you
will dance and sing and rejoice.

Today we are on Day 40 of our 42 Day Program – and
no matter where you have been in your writing,
decide that today is your new beginning.

Declare it your fresh start.

Know that from this point onward, you will grow
even when you stumble and fall. You will continue
to go higher and wider, flow through systems
and procedures, gain strength and find power
in weakness.

Let's prepare to write:

Albert Einstein was a Scientist, a Philosopher
and all around intriguing character whose
presence is felt to many every day long after
he left the physical plane.

Our quote of the day today is incredibly rich
with potent writing seedlings.

Let's take his words and mix in our light and see
what happens as a result.

I am very excited to get started in this program
alongside you as each facilitator inspires,
encourages and provides an atmosphere to
nourish, applaud, energize and activate the writing
muse that is in each individual and thrives in the
group setting for 42 consecutive days which will,
in turn, cause a tangible, remarkable, miraculous
shift for each participant.

Tools for You To Use:

A journey of this sort is best started on a
solid foundation, one of strong intent and with
the right tools - tools which will support the
growth that wants to take place.

our tools take several forms.

The physical tools I will ask you to use are
simple.
#1) A spiral notebook - something like a simple,
8 1/2 inch by 11 inch single subject notebook.
I prefer notebooks with 60 to 90 pages.  Large
enough to be substantial but not so huge that
they "bulk up and overpower" the rest of your stuff.

#2) An adequate number of readily available
pencils and pens.

This is when people often stop and say "Can't
I use my computer and keyboard?"

I do most of my writing on my keyboard AND for
this course, my request is you write the "old fashioned
way" (pencil or pen and paper) whenever possible.

Writing by hand actually slows down the writing process-
and this is a good thing!

Please try it out during our free flow writing
moments.  If it doesn't work for you - it is ok.
At least you gave it a try.

Our second type of tool is an energetic one -
I call them our Passion Points. We have ten of them,
based on our different specialty areas to study.

Passion Write Points: 1 - 10

Passion Write Point #1 - Authentic Emotion

I allow myself to be pure, raw and completely
myself as I give myself permission to grow
with each word I write.  I trust myself as a
writer and as a person.  I know my right readers
connect with my heart message no matter what
shape or direction my writing takes today.

Passion Write Point #2 - Sense of Sight

I expand my witness of the world through
my words. I see the ordinary as extraordinary
as I communicate with ease and grace.  My
eyes – my vision – the sights that I see and
describe with my words – open to the light.

Passion Write Point #3 - Sense of Sound

Word music dances in my mind and heart, lifting
my energy so that the words float effortlessly
to my hands, my pencil, my pen, the keyboard. 
I know my words contain chimes, drumbeats,
buzzing, popping and rhythm that brings me
profound contentment and peace when I allow
myself to listen.  Gratifying passion is
shared with all who hear my words.

Passion Write Point #4 - Sense of Smell

Through practice and awareness, I awaken myself
and my readers to the ancient, highly connective
and my readers to the ancient, highly connective
and memory evoking sense of smell.  I reach into
the depths through breathing scent into my words.
I grow as a writer each day.

Passion Write Point #5 - Sense of Touch

I notice how objects fill the palm of my hand. I
tune into the temperature, the smoothness, the
moisture, the weight. Each subtle nuance has its
unique impact upon me.  I notice and fill my words
with awareness, connection and unity.

Passion Write Point #6 - Sense of Taste

My favored flavor echoes onto the page so that it
is held and experienced for an eternity.  It connects,
impacts, opens up like none of my other senses.
Tastes say home, they say exotic, they say sensual,
they say MMMMM MMMMM and bring satisfied sighs and
deep breath. Through delicious words, I say yes

Passion Write Point # 7 - Place

I sit in the center of myself in the center of
another place: a setting which others can see and
feel and relate to, just like I can see and feel
and relate with my words.  This place: the setting,
is like the canvas where my words are born – the
setting provides the breath and the heartbeat
and the frame for my work to take form.

Passion Write Point #8 - Clarity

I know clarity intimately through continued
practice. I open to the expansiveness of the
universe and see a joyousness reflected back
to me that rings like a crystal bell, is clearer
visually than a laser beam and smells so richly
I can taste it at the back of my throat.  I allow
the energy of passion to move through me onto the
page with absolute purity.  Being specific with
words brings increased clarity.  My heart expands
to recognize the purity within me. I am a writer.
With Much Love and Anticipation.

Passion Write Point #9 - Deep Connection

I connect in each moment to deep honor, respect
and admiration for the greatest good that resides
in each member of the human community.  I am
grounded and filled with this powerful element
which bridges-connects- spans of space which would

Passion Write Point #10 - Loving Peace

I know the delight in the divine delivery of
emotions and presence into my heart-mind and onto
the page. I know this moment contains all I need
as will the next moment and the next moment and
the next. I am an active, inspired creator.
Everything is perfect, I am perfect, my world is
perfect.

We begin today's lesson with a story from my life:

Two sentences from 1977.

The one single, specific memory I have from the ninth grade was
during a math class. We were being introduced to Geometry for the
first time.

The teacher asked "What is intuition?"

I raised my hand (an unusual act for me at 15 years old) and
said, "It is having a hunch: sort of knowing or having an idea of
something out of the blue, like without really knowing you somehow
know."

In my mind's eye the picture is crystal clear. How the teacher was
poised, what his sport coat looked like, where in the room he was
standing, how his head was turned just so. I think his name might
have been Mr. Tennaro. I was in his class for one week.

Yet that question and answer still calls out to me almost twenty
five years later. Forever caught in freeze frame across three
thousand miles and countless other classrooms and a huge number of
hours and moments and conversations. Intuition. An inkling.

Sharon Franquemont, former professor of Intuition at John F. Kennedy
University and author of "You Already Know What to Do" makes an
important distinction. Rather than using intuition as one of many
tools for living, she suggests that one choose to make the practice
of intuition a way of life.

Some think, "That is all well and good and I know for a fact I have
no clue how to apply this to my writing life.  I don't even know for
sure if I believe in intuition in the first place." Before we
discuss that, let's point to some very interesting illustrations.

It may be surprising to learn that some of history's greatest
thinkers believed an intuitive lifestyle was very beneficial. Albert
Einstein said, "The only real valuable thing is intuition."

For centuries inventors, entrepreneurs, engineers, parents, children
and yes, artists, have all experienced
intuitive flashes. These inklings sometimes lead to something big
which reaches into positive growth situation beyond our usual way of
thinking or being.

An inkling may lead to a new invention or an improvement upon an
already existing product. Ralph Waldo Emerson described it this
way: "Man is a shrewd inventor, and is ever taking the hint of a new
machine from his own structure, adapting some secret of his own
anatomy in iron,
wood, and leather, to some required function in the work of the
world."

Remember a breakthrough moment in your life.

An "A-ha" or an "Epiphany" moment.

  Arthur Koestler, Hungarian born writer, wrote "The moment of truth,
the sudden emergence of a new insight, is an act of
intuition". Akin to a "sixth sense", intuition brings pieces
together. It gives the gift of heightened awareness.

It also helps to listen to your body.  In Malcolm Gladwell's
breakthrough book, "Blink", a study of the ability to make rapid
decisions based on the adaptive unconscious wrote about listening to
your body when you have an intuitive inkling.  When something
doesn't "feel right" and you get a strange feeling in the pit of
your stomach or the palms of your hands get sweaty – follow that
inkling.

So what does this have to do with writing?

Your intuition is one of your most important partners in the process
of taking your writing to your next level.  Listening to its voice
will make a substantial, heart shifting, world changing difference
to both you and those people who are blessed enough to come in
contact with your words.

On the other hand, if you ignore the inklings you hear – nothing
will happen.

I know this first hand. My writing was put on the back burner
for years.  My idea for my website was present in my mind for a
long time before I took action – and little didI know my
writing would be central to every aspect of my website and my
business.

The path wasn't clear at all.  It was murky and filled with "Not
knowing" and "doubt" and "denial" and "I'll do what I THINK I want
to do" which was caused by her unwillingness to listen.

The messages to focus on writing were being divinely sent as early
as college when my classmate in "Politics of Africa" said, "I
enjoyed your paper so much, I read it through completely – twice."

She read a ten page single spaced term paper on the Ivory Coast
twice?  Once "just for fun?"

This particular message was memorable to just because it was so
outrageous.  That was a densely written term paper.

It was also written with heart, with soul and with a strong love for
the words and the message.

More than ten years after that, I was working (and very unhappy
about it) for the County of Kern.  The free-spirited, artistic soul
was busy being a Bureaucrat because it "seemed" the right thing to
do.  I thought then I was following a divine course  - yet she
seemed to stop getting messages the more miserable she became.

A co-worker said to her, "You pack more good information in a really
short memo than anyone else I know…. And they are so artfully
expressed, too."

I started writing on her lunch hour. It was at a crowded meeting
held at the library that the messages began to really make
themselves heard.

Your intuition will assist you to guide your characters, to nudge
you in a certain direction with your creative non-fiction.

Your intuition will hand you exactly the write word at exactly the
right time.

Your intuition has been your partner in all the free flow writing we
have created in this program.  It is the energy which passes along
those first words, those next words, and opens up the flow.

Let's prepare to write:

We are getting to the end of our time together.  It is bittersweet.
We have come a long way – and I know I will miss the daily
interactions both "live" and via email and also the energetic
connection with those we don't "hear" or "see" writing yet we know
you are writing.

Dear Writers,

It is our last Sunday "live" - at least
for now. More than one person has asked
me "when is the next time we will be
doing this program?!"

We will begin the next program sometime
in late Spring - I will undoubtedly be
scheduling it sometime in the next
few days.

My intention is to take July and August
off this year - my last Summer before
Sam starts kindergarten and Katherine
starts High School - so I want to
be as purely "Just Mommy" as possible.

With that intent in mind, the start will
be sometime in May. Watch your email for

Architecture of Passion Point #7 (Place)

Julie's Passion Point: I sit in the center of myself in
the center of another place: a setting which others
can see and feel and relate to, just like I can see
and feel and relate with my words.  This place: the
setting, is like the canvas where my words are
born – the setting provides the breath and the
heartbeat and the frame for my work
to take form.

Carl Zimmer wrote these words in his
book _Soul Made Flesh_ "Emotions
sharpen our senses, focus our brains,
help us remember more clearly."

The places or settings
which fill our writing do something similar –
your writing changes according to both the
space you are in and the place which
provides the backdrop for your writing.

Your voice changes, the mood changes.
The atmosphere provides a Technicolor
accompaniment to the words themselves.

Have you ever imagined what the musical
"Oklahoma!" would be like if it were "Ohio!"
instead? What if "Chicago", the play and
movie, was instead "Phoenix."

What wouldn't work anymore if you picked
these words up from their spaces and plopped
them down squarely in entirely different locales.

The people would speak differently, they
might move differently – the rules would
be shifted due to the culture of the area.

It would be like the difference between
lounging at home in your pajamas and
going out in the community in a velour
jogging suit. Both outfits are very
similar – but the jogging suit is more
appropriate to wear out and about
than your jimmies are, even if
they are very similar.

Simply stated: behavior changes when we
change the setting.

Let's go back to the pajamas in the
living room versus the jogging suit at
Starbucks. How do you act differently?

Perhaps some of you don't.

Think about that for a moment.

Speaking of your living room and
Starbucks, here is something else
to consider.  The places we write
also impact the words we choose,
our pacing, cadence and rhythm.

Writers have been known to bring
their writing gear out into the community.
Natalie Goldberg often alludes to her
"writing dates" with other writers. They
meet in coffee houses and restaurants
and scribe separately together.

It is a perfect solution both for more
extroverted writers as well as for the
sake of accountability.  If you have
challenges with getting your work done,
consider meeting up with a buddy and
writing together socially so that you
can get your "with people" needs met
and at the same time honor your craft.

Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote
the children's classic, "The Secret
Garden".  Her work became a Tony
Award Winning Broadway Musical
with music written by Lucy Simon
(sister of Carly Simon.)
She said, "I am writing in the garden.
To write as one should of a garden one
must write not outside it or merely
somewhere near it, but in the garden."
She writes in the garden and tunes
into the setting as it literally
seeps into her being.

Question:

Is there a place in your current life
or in your past that the setting has
seeped into your being? For Frances
Hodgson Burnett, her garden became
the inspiration and framework for the
classic work which continues to sell
well even nearly 70 years after its initial
publication date.

One of the joys of working in theatre has
been the actual building and painting of the
sets. When we build the sets, we are literally
creating a place from nothingness.

From the set, the entire story is built.

It creates a "concrete" place for the actors
and the director and the technical people to
realistically portray the lives of their characters.
I have learned to love the sacred time when
we make the rooms or backdrop perfectly
compliment the time period, the character's
personality and creatively piece together what
we have on hand and then create effects to fill
in the rest.

One day I spent 12 hours in the theatre painting.
There was on 4 hour stint standing 10 feet off the
ground on a ladder, painting dot after dot after
dot to simulate the pointillism method of painting
developed by French Impressionist painter,
Georges Surrat.

The background created a picture audiences
could see – they could understand the character
or George better because the audience literally
became a part of George's painting through the
dot-dot-dot-dots everywhere.

The painting – the setting – became as much
of a character as everyone else in the production.
As writers, part of your job is to fashion word
pictures from "the thin air."  Painting a picture
with words is like inhaling the swirling heat
from a mug of hot chocolate at a football
game in a game in the middle of November.
Everything is cold – except for the pieces of
flesh quietly kissed by that swirl of heat and
then your lips, tongue and throat feel the ripple
of warmth from the cocoa which reminds you
exactly what heat means.

Let's prepare to write:

It is time to tie this all together.

For our writing today we will paint a word picture
inspired from a quote from Anton Chekhov.

In your writing, "show" the reader your setting
through creating vivid word paintings.  Your setting
for this exercise is either the place where you live
(and write) or the setting for your current project.

Here is the Chekhov quote:

"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me
the glint of light on broken glass."

Now your task is to show your setting – show
it as evocatively as possible through using a
variety of your senses to pull out the most
important sensory details as possible.

Your prompt is simply "I will show you….." and
then simply write.

Again, "I will show you….."

Please write until you hear my voice requesting
that you stop.

Further integration: This week really pay attention
the the "settings" in your life. They don't have to
be melodramatic, like some of the older musicals.

Instead, you can play it better than ever.

Write your settings - notice how they appear and
notice when happens after you have been engaged
with your savored observations.

alongside you as each facilitator inspires,
encourages and provides an atmosphere to
nourish, applaud, energize and activate the writing
muse that is in each individual and thrives in the
group setting for 42 consecutive days which will,
in turn, cause a tangible, remarkable, miraculous
shift for each participant.

Tools for You To Use:

A journey of this sort is best started on a
solid foundation, one of strong intent and with
the right tools - tools which will support the
growth that wants to take place.

our tools take several forms.

The physical tools I will ask you to use are
simple.
#1) A spiral notebook - something like a simple,
8 1/2 inch by 11 inch single subject notebook.
I prefer notebooks with 60 to 90 pages.  Large
enough to be substantial but not so huge that
they "bulk up and overpower" the rest of your stuff.

#2) An adequate number of readily available
pencils and pens.

This is when people often stop and say "Can't
I use my computer and keyboard?"

I do most of my writing on my keyboard AND for
this course, my request is you write the "old fashioned
way" (pencil or pen and paper) whenever possible.

Writing by hand actually slows down the writing

process-
and this is a good thing!

Please try it out during our free flow writing
moments.  If it doesn't work for you - it is ok.
At least you gave it a try.

Our second type of tool is an energetic one -
I call them our Passion Points. We have ten of them,
based on our different specialty areas to study.

Passion Write Points: 1 - 10

Passion Write Point #1 - Authentic Emotion

I allow myself to be pure, raw and completely
myself as I give myself permission to grow
with each word I write.  I trust myself as a
writer and as a person.  I know my right readers
connect with my heart message no matter what
shape or direction my writing takes today.

Passion Write Point #2 - Sense of Sight

I expand my witness of the world through
my words. I see the ordinary as extraordinary
as I communicate with ease and grace.  My
eyes – my vision – the sights that I see and
describe with my words – open to the light.

Passion Write Point #3 - Sense of Sound

Word music dances in my mind and heart, lifting
my energy so that the words float effortlessly
to my hands, my pencil, my pen, the keyboard. 
I know my words contain chimes, drumbeats,
buzzing, popping and rhythm that brings me
profound contentment and peace when I allow
myself to listen.  Gratifying passion is
shared with all who hear my words.

Passion Write Point #4 - Sense of Smell

Through practice and awareness, I awaken myself
and my readers to the ancient, highly connective
and my readers to the ancient, highly connective
and memory evoking sense of smell.  I reach into
the depths through breathing scent into my words.
I grow as a writer each day.

Passion Write Point #5 - Sense of Touch

I notice how objects fill the palm of my hand. I
tune into the temperature, the smoothness, the
moisture, the weight. Each subtle nuance has its
unique impact upon me.  I notice and fill my words
with awareness, connection and unity.

Passion Write Point #6 - Sense of Taste

My favored flavor echoes onto the page so that it
is held and experienced for an eternity.  It connects,
impacts, opens up like none of my other senses.
Tastes say home, they say exotic, they say sensual,
they say MMMMM MMMMM and bring satisfied sighs and
deep breath. Through delicious words, I say yes

Passion Write Point # 7 - Place

I sit in the center of myself in the center of
another place: a setting which others can see and
feel and relate to, just like I can see and feel
and relate with my words.  This place: the setting,
is like the canvas where my words are born – the
setting provides the breath and the heartbeat
and the frame for my work to take form.

Passion Write Point #8 - Clarity

I know clarity intimately through continued
practice. I open to the expansiveness of the
universe and see a joyousness reflected back
to me that rings like a crystal bell, is clearer
visually than a laser beam and smells so richly
I can taste it at the back of my throat.  I allow
the energy of passion to move through me onto the
page with absolute purity.  Being specific with
words brings increased clarity.  My heart expands
to recognize the purity within me. I am a writer.

Passion Write Point #9 - Deep Connection

I connect in each moment to deep honor, respect
and admiration for the greatest good that resides
in each member of the human community.  I am
grounded and filled with this powerful element
which bridges-connects- spans of space which would
have been disconnected otherwise.  I fill my words
with expansive gratitude and knowing passion.

Passion Write Point #10 - Loving Peace

I know the delight in the divine delivery of
emotions and presence into my heart-mind and onto
the page. I know this moment contains all I need
as will the next moment and the next moment and
the next. I am an active, inspired creator.
Everything is perfect, I am perfect, my world is
perfect.

In _Natural History of the Senses_, Diane
Ackerman writes "No two of us taste the
same plum. Heredity allows some people
to eat asparagus and pee fragrantly
afterwards (as Proust describes in
"Remembrance of Things Past") or
eat artichokes and then taste any drink,
even water, as sweet.  Some people are
more sensitive to bitter tastes than others
and find saccarin appalling, while others
guzzle diet sodas.  Salt cravers have
saltier saliva.  Their mouths are accustomed
to a higher sodium level and foods must be
saltier before they register as salty.  Of course,
everyone's saliva is different and distinctive,
flavored by diet, whether they smoke, heredity
and perhaps even mood."

Have you ever noticed how professional
tasters (wine connoisseurs, restaurant aficionados,
chefs, etcetera) are able to discern so much
more about what they are tasting than those
of us who are "just eating food" or "drinking wine".

We say,:"Oh, this tastes yummy!" while they
notice every subtle variation in the taste, the
smell, the texture and may even be able to
tell how the creator of the dish or the drink
prepared it simply by placing it into their
mouths (or to their nose and then their
mouths) and letting their highly practiced
sense do its thing.

It is fascinating to observe.  In the movie,
"Sideways" the contrast between the
characters who are passionate about
wine and those who see wine as simply
something to drink serves as a
tasty example.

The characters who adore wine take their
time in tasting.

They prepare themselves by smelling the
wine deeply and discerning the subtleties
first via the scent. Next, they looked at the
appearance of the wine.

No, they didn't simply say "This is a red wine"
they noticed all sorts of subtle variations in
the shadings, in how it filled the glass and
how it moved along the sides of the glass.

The wine was a subject to the wine lovers in the
same way a painter's subject is to the painter:
commanding their full attention and presence.

Do you remember these words from Simon
and Garfunkle's classic song, 59th Street Bridge
Song (Feeling' Groovy)?

"Slow down, you move too fast
You gotta make the morning last
Just kickin' down the cobblestones
Lookin' for fun and
Feelin' groovy____________"

This seems like the magic talisman for really
enjoying each taste as it courses across our
palate.  Not surprisingly, this may also be the
magic talisman for truly enjoying life as well.

Just this week I sat down to a meal with a
friend.  I wasn't very hungry but here we were,
at a favorite Mexican restaurant.  I ordered the
Black Bean soup, something I had
never tried before.

My friend ordered… I am not sure what. He
enjoyed it completely.

I intentionally sat with my bowl of soup and
treasured each mouthful. I found myself
noticing the slight gritty texture of the soup
and the deep heartiness of the beans as
they quietly melted in my mouth.

I also noticed that even though I didn't eat
very much, I was pleasantly filled – both by
the taste and the experience itself.

I followed a thread through Merriam Webster
when I was preparing this lesson and I made
the most delicious discovery.

I looked up "savor" which I always imbued
with richness. To me, "savor" was like the
ultimate luxury car of tastiness.  I was surprised
to see my friend, Merriam Webster, simply
said savor was "to taste."

That's it? I thought. It also sent me to "Sage".

Sage? I had always simply thought of "sage"
as a spice.

Ahhh, I discovered. The root of "Sage" is
also in taste.

Merriam Webster expounded like this "from Latin
sapere to taste, have good taste, be wise; akin
to Oscan sipus knowing, Old Saxon ansebbian
to perceive."

"Wse through reflection and experience"…. Just
like the passionate wine tasters from "Sideways".

It also reminded me of the older, more serious
sibling of the 59th Street Bridge Song. It was
more serious, yes, and it carried the same very
important message for each of us.

Take your time – there is plenty.

Notice the subtleties – see your
experience not as an object to be
grabbed and owned or put into a
tightly locked, darkened cabinet;
see your experience as a subject
to be revered, to be reflected upon,
to be put under a warm, rosey hued light.

Take your time with the food that you eat.

Take your time with the refreshing drinks
you are served.

Allow each bite to slowly pass through
your mouth. Do more than greet it with "hey,
how are you?" instead greet it with a warm,
body-to-body hug.

Doesn't that feel good?

Let's prepare to write:

Paul Simon closes his song with these
simple and evocative lyrics:

"Life, I love you
All is groovy____________________"

Our love of life deepens when we give
ourselves permission to slow down, to
revel in the moment.

Our prompt today will invite you to do exactly
that with your words.

Ready?

Consider what it would be like to treat each
bite of your next meal as a deep, soulful,
body-to-body hug.  You know the sort of hug
I am meaning, don't you?  It is the kind of
hug where you can tune into the other
person's heart, their breath and their soul.

Remember that as you write, you may
repeat the prompt as many times as
necessary to really dive into the complexity
of what wants to be heard through your words.

You may also return to this writing later – the
sage in your heart and mind may have
that desire.

Here is the prompt:

"When I experience each bite of my meal as
a body-to-body hug, I….."

Begin to write….

"When I experience each bite of my meal as
a body-to-body hug, I….."

Remember to keep your pencil, pen or fingers
on the keyboard moving until I request you
complete your thought:

"When I experience each bite of my meal as a

Further Reflection:

You probably have an inner knowing already of how
to incorporate today's lesson into the rest of your life.

Slow down, savor each morsel, allow yourself to
deeply and sincerely experience each moment.

Write that intentional slow down, the deliciousness
of each morsel and each moment and
each experience.

One morning, like most mornings, I took my dogs
Hank and Buttercup for a morning walk. It was
lightly misting. Water was lightly falling upon my skin
not unlike the ubiquitous sprinkler misters used
by outdoor restaurants in the middle of summer
to keep their patrons comfortable.

The three of us walked companionably for
about twenty minutes when the sky opened
up and it started to rain much harder.

I felt intoxicated by the water flow upon my
head and face, so I reached into it by tipping
my head back and really feeling each droplet
of water as it poured over my cheeks
and chin and forehead.

They felt like miniature icy daggers yet
they were painless.

I breathed in deeply to see if I could tap
into their fragrance.

I smelled cold interiors, tickling my nose
with their lush frosty wetness. Snowball
fights and pre-snow afternoons when I
would walk out the front door of Glen
Ridge Middle School and inhale deeply,
knowing the snow was imminent.

I smelled the deep freeze "walk-in" from
my days doing restaurant work – when it
felt like only a couple moments inside
were a couple too many.

I smelled deep caverns, where cold water
dripped off stalagtites which had never seen
the light of day and were coated in frozen
water – who knows how long they had
been covered?

I smelled the kitchen of my childhood when
my mother would defrost our refrigerator, an
electric device of some sort stashed inside
for its defrosting.  The ice from inside
smelled so distinctive. 

None of these memories had been with
me until I chose to rejoice in the rain in
the same way I usually rejoice in
staying warm and dry.

I probably would not have been so present
to the scent of the rain had it not been
the awareness of this upcoming lesson. 

It is as if I took Thoreau's quote about
"The fragrance of thought" and brought
it into instant manifestation.

Just like that, I chose to really center
myself in its fragrance and completely
experience it in the moment so that I
could turn around and write of
that moment to you. 

I felt SO full, I walked home with my
feet barely gliding around the ground.

I wanted to embrace all of life, I wanted
to embrace all the people I passed and
ask if they had smelled the cold rain, had
they let it infiltrate their clothing and walked
umbrella-less down the street lately,
allowing their hair to get drenched?

I found when I got home that my clothes
were soaked through to my underclothes.

I bordered on gleeful as I changed my
clothes.  It seemed like a slim price to
pay for such pure exhilaration. 

I wanted to keep the smell alive by writing
it  here. I wanted to hold the smell
in my hand so that I could tap into it when
I wanted to share that icy-crystalline-dagger
experience in a poem or in a song or
in a scene or in an email.

I didn't want it to evaporate, I wanted
to keep it alive.

Writers are so privileged to live an incredible
moment and then split that moment open
so that it can be revisited again and then
shared with others.  Each person reading your
words can visit a similar moment or manifest
their own version of heaven simply because
a writer sewed together a word invitation
that is incribed with these words:

"Join the sensory party, live life with
grandness, gladness and grace!"

In one of our quotes today, Anais Nin
wrote, "If you do not breathe through
writing, if you do not cry out in writing,
or sing in writing, then don't write."

Breath fills the body – and when we
smell deeply we breathe deeply
automatically.

It is simple, then to take those smells
and add grandness to them to
sing in writing.

It is simple, to take smells you breathe
in deeply and add  gladness so that
your heart celebration continues
for a much longer time.

It is simple, to take smells  - mix in
grace – and create blessings through
your words from the superb, peaceful
energy of contentment.

Breathe, now, contentment.

Breathe now, grace.

Breathe now, gladness.

Breathe now, blessings.

Breathing these concepts into our
hearts will allow our sense of smell
to deepen, whether or not "the experts"
agree.  What we know is that filling
ourselves with the energy of these
concepts allow us to focus and accept
their truth rather than climbing aboard the
"What's missing" dialogue
we hear so often.

Instead, we celebrate breathing
deeply, bringing the aromas of our
world into our being through our breath.
We celebrate ourselves in each fragrance.
In doing so, we celebrate life itself.

Prepare to write:

The moment you step into smelling
contentment, grace, blessings and
gladness, you never have to concern
yourself with that task at hand, the ripeness
simply flows from its source into your
heart and out into your words on the page.

Eric Hoffer wrote, "Self-esteem has a
specific odor." Positive, ripe self-esteem
has a very pure energy, a very heightened
energy that says, "I am perfect for this
moment on this stage" and surprise,
surprise, surprise  - she finds
more remarkable experiences.

Today – remember or call to mind your
closest friend – past, present or the one
you want to manifest next!

With this person as your mirror, "ask"
through writing, "What is my fragrance,
when I am at my very best?

What does the "very best me" smell like?

What is it like to breathe in the "very best
me" – what memories are
etched in that scent?

Simply write your response to one or more
of those questions, allowing your words to
flow -

alongside you as each facilitator inspires,
encourages and provides an atmosphere to
nourish, applaud, energize and activate the writing
muse that is in each individual and thrives in the
group setting for 42 consecutive days which will,
in turn, cause a tangible, remarkable, miraculous
shift for each participant.

Tools for You To Use:

A journey of this sort is best started on a
solid foundation, one of strong intent and with
the right tools - tools which will support the
growth that wants to take place.

our tools take several forms.

The physical tools I will ask you to use are
simple.
#1) A spiral notebook - something like a simple,
8 1/2 inch by 11 inch single subject notebook.
I prefer notebooks with 60 to 90 pages.  Large
enough to be substantial but not so huge that
they "bulk up and overpower" the rest of your stuff.

#2) An adequate number of readily available
pencils and pens.

This is when people often stop and say "Can't
I use my computer and keyboard?"

I do most of my writing on my keyboard AND for
this course, my request is you write the "old fashioned
way" (pencil or pen and paper) whenever possible.

Writing by hand actually slows down the writing process-
and this is a good thing!

Please try it out during our free flow writing
moments.  If it doesn't work for you - it is ok.
At least you gave it a try.

Our second type of tool is an energetic one -
I call them our Passion Points. We have ten of them,
based on our different specialty areas to study.

Passion Write Points: 1 - 10

Passion Write Point #1 - Authentic Emotion

I allow myself to be pure, raw and completely
myself as I give myself permission to grow
with each word I write.  I trust myself as a
writer and as a person.  I know my right readers
connect with my heart message no matter what
shape or direction my writing takes today.

Passion Write Point #2 - Sense of Sight

I expand my witness of the world through
my words. I see the ordinary as extraordinary
as I communicate with ease and grace.  My
eyes – my vision – the sights that I see and
describe with my words – open to the light.

Passion Write Point #3 - Sense of Sound

Word music dances in my mind and heart, lifting
my energy so that the words float effortlessly
to my hands, my pencil, my pen, the keyboard. 
I know my words contain chimes, drumbeats,
buzzing, popping and rhythm that brings me
profound contentment and peace when I allow
myself to listen.  Gratifying passion is
shared with all who hear my words.

Passion Write Point #4 - Sense of Smell

Passion Write Point #6 - Sense of Taste

My favored flavor echoes onto the page so that it
is held and experienced for an eternity.  It connects,
impacts, opens up like none of my other senses.
Tastes say home, they say exotic, they say sensual,
they say MMMMM MMMMM and bring satisfied sighs and
deep breath. Through delicious words, I say yes

Passion Write Point # 7 - Place

I sit in the center of myself in the center of
another place: a setting which others can see and
feel and relate to, just like I can see and feel
and relate with my words.  This place: the setting,
is like the canvas where my words are born – the
setting provides the breath and the heartbeat
and the frame for my work to take form.

Passion Write Point #8 - Clarity

I know clarity intimately through continued
practice. I open to the expansiveness of the
universe and see a joyousness reflected back

1. My writing causes a pure resonance
and heightened vibration in the world.

gratifying passionate contentment and peace

Did you hear the temple bells in the vowel sounds?

I did.

This technique is called “assonance”.

Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within
a piece  of writing.  It is frequently used as a device
in poetry AND it can be used in any form of writing.

I intentionally use this form of writing when I am
“at risk” for being stuck.

Here is why:

Creating exercises and games is one of the surest
ways to jump start the creative process.  It unblocks
clogs which may be present due to circumstances,
moods or those moments when life is overfilled and
we get discouraged.

An added bonus is this: listening to your own voice
as you verbally speak the sounds can create another
bridge towards deeper creativity.

It keeps my writing fresh, clear and crisp - especially
during times when I might be more prone to slow
down in my writing practice is to keep a steady
supply of writing games on hand.

One day shortly after the death of my friend, Tom,
I sat at my kitchen table, pencil poised to the page.
I created a word pool based on the vowel sound
“ah” like in “Mom” or “Balm”.

I wasn’t sure what I would create, but I simply
had to create – I knew the longer I only focused
on feeling out of sorts about Tom’s death,
the less likely it would be that I would ever
create any decent writing in the near future.

I chanted “Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah” and let the words flow.

Soon I had quite a collection of words and from
that, wrote a semi-surreal, assonance based
poem.  Listen to the results, really focusing on
the sounds produced in the words.

Dissolving into a bog like trance of tears and disbelief
Someone had absconded with her resolve
Slowly she dropped, loose and floppy
Her body a blonde modge podge
No longer a treasure to behold
Instead a trodden upon over run
Marsh of weeds and soggy grasses
Begging to be cut down and mowed
So something useful could
Be grown, filling the space which now only held
The salt of her tears which slowly filled
Her mouth with an unquenchable thirst
For small, green frogs gathered at dusk
From the nearby pond
Soggy, lifeless green mushing into her
Mouth smothered blithely in butter and
Swallowed almost whole, bonded and
Sought to be more than a blot, a void
A mottled mirage

I remember the muffled awe which struck me
after I composed that poem.

The moment echoed light. If I listened carefully,
I might have heard the string section in an orchestra
playing a grand crescendo of emotion as I tuned
into the waiting "a-ha" experience.

Julia Cameron has an inner censor who hissed "
Who do you think you are, writing a book about
writing?" There the words are, written by Cameron
herself. They march across a page in her book,
"The Right to Write."

Using a tool like an assonance based word
pool can do wonders for squelching the inner
critic – and the outer critic as well.

I was amazed to learn of Julia Cameron having
an inner censor remarkably like my own. The
Divine Diva of inspiring writer-dom herself has
an inner critic?

This realization brought my defenses flopping at my
feet, inert and exempt of their former power.

Julia Cameron hears the same sort of untruth and rumors
and sees the same sneaky slights of hand that we do.

What a relief.

I remember when I interacted with the tormenting
barrier-like wall built up and surrounded by my nay-saying internal
anti-cheering squad.

My wall is made of chain links and barbed wire and
has electrical charges 6,026 feet above and below
it, too. There is no burrowing under it or climbing
over it without some extreme equipment which in
these moments seem way out of reach.

The chain link monster has a built in laughing track
and every single time I get within six inches of it the
wall itself there are out of control shrieks and gales
of laughter and taunting choruses gleefully, hatefully,
scornfully greet me.

I could be doing stand-up comedy in front of creative
souls and laughter would bubble towards me (and
towards themselves) due to the sheer ridiculousness
of my wall plus the joyful recognition that we are not
alone in our disengaging devices. We are also not
alone in the ease and ability to untangle ourselves
from what had at once felt like a strong-hold upon
our hopes and dreams.

We all have these sinister, ordinary, run-of-the-mill
and extravagant false beliefs and barriers to our
own brand of extraordinary-ness. None of us has
the corner on the monumental girth and depth
and tempestuousness of self-doubt.

Mine has ebbs and tides, it rises with occasional mean
spirited notions which I can usually spirit away rather
easily as quickly as they unexpectedly arise.

And guess what?

We can choose to create, to plan or to simply be even
when the winds from the gales of laughter feel like
we could fly our thought-made kites into them.

You, me, Julia Cameron, your next door neighbor
who bears a stunning resemblance to Clark Kent, we
can all choose to write or choose to sew or choose to
make that phone call we have, up until now, let our
own internalized inventions of doom cast their
power upon our moments.

Not any more.

I am siding with Julia. And You. And Me.

Prepare to write:

Today we will build a word pool and use that word
pool in our writing time.  I would like us to use
the vowel sound that is found in “ooohhhm” –
because it is a sacred sound and will keep is
grounded in that spiritual energetic space.

Simply bubble up the words that are spoken
into your heart-mind and I will echo the word
back to you as I write it into the pool in front
of me. You may want to scribe the words
the others speak as we go along.

Here are some words to start the process.

Something        trumpet  Drum   Handsome
Wonder            Winsome now

Now add your words……

When the word collection is complete, I will read
the words back to you.  You may then weave as
many of these words as possible in your writing.
As always, don’t think about what you are creating
simply allow your pencil to move across the page.

The prompt for today is “I hear…..”

“I hear…..”

“I hear……”

Further Integration: Today really hear the world
which surrounds you.  Hear those sounds again,
through your words.  Your writing is becomng
more and more vivid, more and more rewarding
to the reader.

Passion Write Point # 7 - Place

I sit in the center of myself in the center of
another place: a setting which others can see and
feel and relate to, just like I can see and feel
and relate with my words.  This place: the setting,
is like the canvas where my words are born – the
setting provides the breath and the heartbeat
and the frame for my work to take form.

Passion Write Point #8 - Clarity

I know clarity intimately through continued
practice. I open to the expansiveness of the
universe and see a joyousness reflected back
to me that rings like a crystal bell, is clearer
visually than a laser beam and smells so richly
I can taste it at the back of my throat.  I allow
the energy of passion to move through me onto the
page with absolute purity.  Being specific with
words brings increased clarity.  My heart expands
to recognize the purity within me. I am a writer.

I connect in each moment to deep honor, respect
and admiration for the greatest good that resides
in each member of the human community.  I am
grounded and filled with this powerful element
which bridges-connects- spans of space which would
have been disconnected otherwise.  I fill my words
with expansive gratitude and knowing passion.

Passion Write Point #10 - Loving Peace

I know the delight in the divine delivery of
emotions and presence into my heart-mind and onto
the page. I know this moment contains all I need
as will the next moment and the next moment and
the next. I am an active, inspired creator.
Everything is perfect, I am perfect, my world is
perfect.

Architecture of Passion Point #2 (Visual)

We begin our lesson today with a story from my
life - when I was able to see something which
had been invisible for me right in the path yet which
came into sight one incredible morning - a morning
which seemed ordinary to everyone else, yet
wasn't coated at all in "the mundane" - it was
coated in majesty, in wonder, in divine connection.

Listen closely to the story. At one point you will
be called to "see" it unfold as if you were there
as well.

My heart and my vision expanded that day
and it has never been the same ever since.

I sat at my kitchen table, stunned into silence,
heart charged with humble awakening and
pure bliss.

What an amazing privilege to partner with other
human beings through my life work.

My heart was soaring and my breath needed space.
The sun beckoned me outside.

Standing in front of my house I inhaled deeply. The
sun rays completely washed over my face as my
head tilted towards heaven to greet them. My arms
lifted towards the sky without any effort or thought.

Every cell of my body agreed and rang
out, "Yes! Yes!"

My feet moved without my consent, taking me for
a mid morning walk. I smiled contentedly as
I followed, not concerned with where I was
going or anything beyond each time my feet
lifted off the ground and re-connected
with the Earth.

Around the corner waited a magnificent tree
whose friendship was new to me.  From its
appearance, it had been on the planet for several
generations. I have been in residence
less than a couple hundred yards from it for
more than a decade yet it was only
days ago that we had been
"properly introduced".

It had called to me during a walk with my then
eighteen-month-old-son, Samuel.

Since our "formal acquaintance", I would nod to
the tree as I pulled out of my driveway
in the mornings. It towered over all the other
neighborhood trees. As I walked out my
back door I looked to the North. There
it was again in all its evergreen glory
towering over the homes and other trees.

On this particular morning, its lessons would
continue with strength unlike anything
I had ever experienced.

It is time to witness the tree - to bring it to
vivid reality for each of us.

Listen to the words and bring them to vivid life
in your mind's eye.  This is YOUR vision, remember - so
it doesn't matter how close yours comes to
"my" tree, what is important is that you tap into your
vision deeply.

<<For those who are not listening to the audio, read
and then close your eyes and bring it to your vision.>>

The tree has a massive trunk which splits into
four separate sections. Each section is as
large as any of the other neighborhood trees. It
has one fork and then two smaller forks
in its trunk branchings.

I was looking up at its majesty when I saw
something new.

I stopped in my tracks right in the middle
of the street.

Paused.

Halted.

The jaw dropping silence was so deep I could
feel and hear the reverberations of my heart as
it clattered in my chest.

I tilted my head to an angle when I saw it.

The tree took a sunbeam into its branching and
made the light three dimensional. It held
the light as surely as I have ever held anything
in my hands.

I had seen this three dimensional light before
though only in photographs.  Usually the intimacy
of such photographs would bring tears
to my eyes.

In this moment my new friend, this magnificent tree,
held the ray of light in place especially and only for me.

I moved to a different angle and the light disappeared.

I went backwards and it vaporized.

I crouched down and it was simply no more.

I stood still, in the pulse of the moment, and the ray
of light held me.

With shaking arms, I lifted my hands so that they
would mimic the "V" shape of the
branching. I wanted to physically connect
with the beam of light.

With my hands lifted and my head back, I felt a
surge of love. A receiving of energy.
An awareness of standing squarely in place
where truth and love and wholeness
is conceived.

One of my feet involuntarily moved back to
maintain balance as I became unsteadied
by the grandeur of the moment as I bowed
my head in amazed humility. My hands
came down from their V with my thumbs
resting at a spot that pointed to my
heart.  My eyes closed as a silent tear
leaked from my eye.

Standing in the middle of the street, my
chin rested almost on the tips of my
fingers as I held the ancient pose which
proclaims as it whispers, "Namaste".

Prepare to Write:

In today's lesson, the vision of light in a tree
beams through the words to touch your heart.

Consider for a moment a vision of light in your
life. 

Energetically speak "Light" into your heart space.

Breathe the light into your heartspace, feeling it fill
your body.

"Light"

"Light"

Now begin to write, describing your light in brilliant,
everlasting detail.

If your writing begins to slow down, simply re-invoke
the movement by speaking. "I see" once again and
go a little bit deeper each time.

Integration: Our writing today opened our consciousness
to see light - in doing so, we will automatically be more
aware of light.

Write the light, being very specific. Allow it to fill
your heart and soul.

alongside you as each facilitator inspires,
encourages and provides an atmosphere to
nourish, applaud, energize and activate the writing
muse that is in each individual and thrives in the
group setting for 42 consecutive days which will,
in turn, cause a tangible, remarkable, miraculous
shift for each participant.

Tools for You To Use:

A journey of this sort is best started on a
solid foundation, one of strong intent and with
the right tools - tools which will support the
growth that wants to take place.

our tools take several forms.

The physical tools I will ask you to use are
simple.
#1) A spiral notebook - something like a simple,
8 1/2 inch by 11 inch single subject notebook.
I prefer notebooks with 60 to 90 pages.  Large
enough to be substantial but not so huge that
they "bulk up and overpower" the rest of your stuff.

#2) An adequate number of readily available
pencils and pens.

This is when people often stop and say "Can't
I use my computer and keyboard?"

I do most of my writing on my keyboard AND for
this course, my request is you write the "old fashioned
way" (pencil or pen and paper) whenever possible.

Writing by hand actually slows down the writing process-
and this is a good thing!

Please try it out during our free flow writing
moments.  If it doesn't work for you - it is ok.
At least you gave it a try.

Our second type of tool is an energetic one -
I call them our Passion Points. We have ten of them,
based on our different specialty areas to study.

Passion Write Points: 1 - 10

Passion Write Point #1 - Authentic Emotion

I allow myself to be pure, raw and completely
myself as I give myself permission to grow
with each word I write.  I trust myself as a
writer and as a person.  I know my right readers
connect with my heart message no matter what
shape or direction my writing takes today.

Passion Write Point #2 - Sense of Sight

I expand my witness of the world through
my words. I see the ordinary as extraordinary
as I communicate with ease and grace.  My
eyes – my vision – the sights that I see and
describe with my words – open to the light.

Passion Write Point #3 - Sense of Sound

Word music dances in my mind and heart, lifting
my energy so that the words float effortlessly
to my hands, my pencil, my pen, the keyboard. 
I know my words contain chimes, drumbeats,
buzzing, popping and rhythm that brings me
profound contentment and peace when I allow
myself to listen.  Gratifying passion is
shared with all who hear my words.

Passion Write Point #4 - Sense of Smell

Through practice and awareness, I awaken myself
and my readers to the ancient, highly connective
and my readers to the ancient, highly connective
and memory evoking sense of smell.  I reach into
the depths through breathing scent into my words.
I grow as a writer each day.

Passion Write Point #5 - Sense of Touch

I notice how objects fill the palm of my hand. I
tune into the temperature, the smoothness, the
moisture, the weight. Each subtle nuance has its
unique impact upon me.  I notice and fill my words

Today’s lesson comes from several stories
from my life so that you can connect to
situations in your life story that may illustrate
self trust, courage, and the rich wellspring
of emotion that we can tap into as writers.

Our deepest feelings yearn to be expressed.

I am not talking about red-hot-anger or
lack-based-ranting, I am talking about heartfelt,
truth-filled and sacred responses to life.

Listen to these two stories and hear your
message within them.

The little bunny slowly scampered towards
its home. It wasn't hampered by fear of me
or my blonde-curly-furred dog.

I had never seen anything like it.

I greeted the bunny and moved along.

All of a sudden there was an identical relative
to the earlier bunny.  It was neither quick nor
concerned. He stood watching us and was
apparently as intrigued by our presence
as we were with his presence.

Sandy wagged his tail in delight, not pulling
on the leash or chasing the little
furry-fluffy-cutey.

We kept walking.

We saw another bunny. And another bunny.
And another bunny. We saw
so many I stopped counting.

As we rounded a corner, two larger bunnies
darted down the hill. I could feel their little
hearts palpitating in distress.

My heart responded with a like, fast,
staccato rhythm for just a
split second.

I would rather be the first bunnies. These
bunnies had not yet learned a fear response.
Instead, they held their moments in their
awareness. They watched  Sandy and me
and saw we didn’t pose a threat. They
released any concern and hopped
peacefully home.

I am a person who is curious, calm, and
deliberate in movement. My tendency is
towards courage, of intentionally not
choosing to be afraid. I want to be like
the courageous bunny, not a person
who races fearfully from a perceived,
non-existent threat.

Some might look at those baby bunnies
as foolish and naïve.

I see them as gatherers of right information.

They witnessed what was so and released
any need to be fearful. They chose peace.

The next night I watched one of my very
favorite shows, ER.  It was one of the best
episodes I had ever seen– the night when
Carter and Kem give birth to their son: a
little boy who never lived outside
his mother’s womb.

Every Thursday night includes a ritual with my
friend Jesse. We have a Post-ER recap every week
where we discuss the action on the show.

That night was the same as it has been for several
seasons. We came together on MSN Messenger and
were initially speechless.

We talked and shared and talked about our personal lives
vis a vis the story and over the thirty minute discussion
I noticed the saltiness from uncried tears was beginning
to irritate my eyes.

We decided to end our conversation so that I could
have some quiet time, drink some water and sit on
my front porch and let the tears flow.

My blood felt thick and hot, just how my blood gets
when depression moves in. Each time I have been
aware of this state arriving, I note how the blood
feels.

It pumped through my veins like sludge. It felt like
it would clot easily. I can feel the rhythm of each
pahrump of my heart because it all feels like slow
motion.

I skipped my porch and went straight for the lawn.
I threw myself on the blanket of freshly shorn grass
and waited in the quiet stillness of near midnight.

My nose inhaled the scent of the grass. It created
a jungle for a bug I could barely see as it slithered
through the to-him-jungle. He seemed curious about
this human splayed out in the middle of his nightscape
home.

The busy street I live on was eerily still, giving us room
to breathe, side by side by side. The moon rays
gently held us together as we considered the moment.

I turned my cheek to the cold, pointy grass and felt it
tickle my ear. My bug friend had become bored with
me and moved along to discover other intriguing
parts of the grass.

A train called from off in the distance. Its my Grandpa
again.

In that moment, I felt the presence of so many. It was
so still, so empty and simultaneously so filled.

I felt comfort.

Hearts telling me "Be strong"

"Have courage"

"There is nothing, nothing to be afraid of at all."

"Look around you, you are never, ever alone."

"Even here, on the front lawn at midnight in the shimmery
near silence you are never ever alone."

I heard my dog, Sandy, who was in the backyard. He knew I
was out there on the lawn.  I could hear him beckoning to me.

I rolled onto my back and gazed up at my beloved
like-a-Sequoia-Palm-Tree.

I heard some gently chirping birds who wanted to enter into
this stillness and add their quiet love into the center. "We are
here too, in the unlikely cloak of darkness we sing."

I held that bouquet of glorious moments in my mind
and in my heart.  The beauty unfolded because I
did not judge my emotion, I didn’t try to eliminate
it or push it out of my consciousness.

Instead I held my sadness. I witnessed it.  I gave
it space to be present so that I could move
to the next stage.

The problems arise when we lean towards self
judgment and criticism, denial of the emotion
or unwillingness to go through the healing
power of short term pain in order to get to
the heart-felt space of holding, witnessing
and releasing anything that needs
to be released.

Let's Prepare to write:

Through these stories of holding, witnessing
and releasing, you may have been reminded
of a time in the past when you went through
a similar pattern or you may, right now, be
aware of a situation in your life that is ready
to be held, witnessed and released.

Bring that experience to light.

Listen again to our passion point of today:

I allow myself to be pure, raw and completely
myself as I allow myself to grow with each
word I write.  I trust myself as a writer and
as a person.  I know my right readers connect
with my heart message no matter what
shape or direction my writing takes today.

Our prompt today is three-fold. Don't concern
yourself with getting the wording "just so" instead
concern yourself with writing the feeling,
allowing it the space to be, and then finally
letting it go - releasing it.

Here is your prompt:

“The feeling I want to witness is…
and when I hold it, I notice……
and now, I release this feeling of….

If your pencil or pen or fingers slow down,
restate the beginning of the quote and allow
your pencil to continue moving – perhaps
there is another memory wanting to be
brought into the limelight for healing.

“The feeling I want to witness is…
and when I hold it, I notice……
and now, I release this feeling of….

<< Please write until you hear my request
of you to stop.>>

Further Integration:

Be like those bunnies today - witness
whatever is so without attachment or
fear.

Then hold it - and release it.

Simple, whole and holy. Sacred and
soothing.

Hold, witness, release.

And then write - and continue to write some more.

I notice how objects fill the palm of my hand. I
tune into the temperature, the smoothness, the
moisture, the weight. Each subtle nuance has its
unique impact upon me.  I notice and fill my words
with awareness, connection and unity.

Passion Write Point #6 - Sense of Taste

My favored flavor echoes onto the page so that it
is held and experienced for an eternity.  It connects,
impacts, opens up like none of my other senses.
Tastes say home, they say exotic, they say sensual,
they say MMMMM MMMMM and bring satisfied sighs and
deep breath. Through delicious words, I say yes

Passion Write Point # 7 - Place

I sit in the center of myself in the center of
another place: a setting which others can see and
feel and relate to, just like I can see and feel
and relate with my words.  This place: the setting,
is like the canvas where my words are born – the
setting provides the breath and the heartbeat
and the frame for my work to take form.

Passion Write Point #8 - Clarity

I know clarity intimately through continued
practice. I open to the expansiveness of the
universe and see a joyousness reflected back
to me that rings like a crystal bell, is clearer
visually than a laser beam and smells so richly
I can taste it at the back of my throat.  I allow
the energy of passion to move through me onto the
page with absolute purity.  Being specific with
words brings increased clarity.  My heart expands
to recognize the purity within me. I am a writer.

I connect in each moment to deep honor, respect
and admiration for the greatest good that resides
in each member of the human community.  I am

James Taylor said it like this: "The secret of life is
enjoying the passage of time."

Sit with that a minute.

Hear it again.

Close your eyes as allow it to echo through your
mind and heart.

Read it again. Stay with me as we take it a
step deeper.

The way to enjoy the passage of time is to allow
yourself to be grateful in each and every moment
for each and every piece of each and every
experience even when you look around thinking
"this is not what I bargained for today!"

Actually, it is ESPECIALLY when you look around
yourself thinking, "This is NOT what I bargained for
today, yesterday, last week, tomorrow or EVER!"
In these times, the power of this secret is
revealed with even more power and passion.

I understand how easy it is to be grateful when
the positive evidence is flowing and surrounds
you in every situation in your life. Ironically, it is
when there is little or NO evidence of ANY positive
flow ANYWHERE that you stand the most to gain
through a purposeful, deliberate shift.

This is when the positive practice of patience can
serve you in each part of your life and especially
in the creative aspect of your life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Adopt the pace of
nature: her secret is patience.”

Listen – what does a “slow down” of flow indicate?

It does not indicate wrongness. It does NOT indicate
inability. It does NOT indicate failure.

It is an invitation to discover the path towards being
a writer who enjoys every moment of the process
of writing, regardless of its outcome or appearance.

Edmund Burke said, “Patience will achieve more
than force.”

It is an invitation to be grateful for the simplicity of
the secret of life… and the secret of
putting the pen to the page and letting it move,
simply, easily, effortlessly.

I loved a message from Sheila Finkelstein on the
discussion list, she wrote:

>>> I was "seeing" what I was writing... Interesting,
this free form writing. <<<

Yes, Sheila, it is interesting, blissful, peaceful – and
allows movement into the quiet, patient places deep
within our soul.

To further quote James Taylor: "Any fool can do it.
There ain't nothing to it" and "Einstein said we could
never understand it all."

So instead of needing to KNOW how it works or
why it works or trying to prove how or why it won't
work for you, continue to take your time with it,
to experiment.

Now is your time to step into a place of enjoying
the passage of time as you allow gratitude to do
its work both with you and for you.

St. Augustine said, “Patience is the companion
of wisdom.”

Listen to these words from Elizabeth Berg from
her book, _Escaping into the Open _: “If you have
the calling to be a writer, it’s not going to go away
any more than the shape of your nose will. Your
need and longing and ability to express yourself
will come back. Like love, you can’t force it. Like
love, it will find you when it is ready. In addition
to that, just because you are not putting pen
to paper or fingers to computer keys doesn’t
mean you’re not writing: if you are a writer any
time you are observing you are working.”

One of the pure joys of the writing we do here is
that it is not a forceful, “gotta do it” kind of writing,
it is a partnership with energy, with the divine – like
communion in a sacred space.

We simply open the door here and allow whatever
wants to come onto the page to feel welcomed. Often
times what we write surprises us. Sometimes it even
delights and amazes us.

Prepare to Write:

We opened today’s lesson with some lyrics from
James Taylor: “The secret of life is enjoying the
passage of time.”

I am thinking you have your own secret of life.

Today in our writing, we will focus on your secret
of life….. it may be related to loving or patience or
not… it may be totally off the map and
unexpected.

Further integration: Practice patience today in the
“little things” – the moments when you have to
wait when you would rather not, when you have
to listen to someone talk longer than you think

Julie's Passion Point #9 - I connect in each moment

It takes a good eight hours to drive from Bakersfield
to Flagstaff, Arizona when you drive without stopping.
With two energetic children and nice, lengthy
play-exercise-replenishment-stops in playgrounds
along the way, it took a few hours longer.

I was pleased to notice that this time around the
lengthier ride did not make for crankier children. We
were on the interstate somewhere near Williams,
Arizona and Sam was literally overcome with
awed joy.

"The sky" Sam said reverently. "Mommy – look.
The sky!"

No longer was I concerned with the time on the
clock. I gave up estimating our time of arrival or
planning any of our activities while we were visiting.

Like Sam, I was blissfully intoxicated by the wide
embrace of the divine through the incredible breadth
and depth of the sky as it stretched for miles on end.
There was no barrier to our view. Pure beauty filled
our hearts as we looked and looked and looked.

"Yes, Sam." I answered. "The sky."

It didn't need explanation.

Its appearance alone was a stand for the infinite.

I drove and looked, filling myself with the expansive
space which was simply Arizona being Arizona.

It was just itself being itself.

There is a scene in the classic movie Mr. Holland’s
Opus that is among my favorite of all movie scenes.
Whether or not you have ever seen it, you will
appreciate the message.

Gertrude tried and she tried and she tried and
she just couldn’t get a handle on how to make
her clarinet sound the way she intended it to
sound.  She practiced the best that she could
yet all she seemed to manage was more
struggle – more squealing and
more missed notes.

She finally told Mr. Holland she had blown her
last bad note on the Clarinet.  She was giving
it up to pursue something else.

Neither Gertrude nor Mr. Holland knew it in
that moment, but she was about to become
his first breakthrough student.

Mr. Holland asked Gertrude to try to play one
more time, just one more time, and before
she played a note he asked her, “What is
your favorite thing about yourself?”

Gertrude paused before shyly admitting,
“My hair.”  She wore her flame red hair
in two ponytails which sweetly framed
her cherubic face.

“What is it you like about your hair?”

“My Dad says it reminds him of the
sunrise….” She blushed as she responded,
her face now a vivid match for her hair.

“Good… good….” said Mr. Holland. “Now
close your eyes and see the sunrise.”  Gertrude
dutifully did exactly that, a smile gently
sat on her lips.

“Now, Gertrude, play the sunrise.”

She focused on the music in front of her,
hands grasped tightly at the well worn clarinet
which filled her hands. 

“No, Gertrude, close your eyes to see
the sunrise. And then play the sunrise.”

Her gentle smile returned and her tight
grip on her instrument relaxed. She softly
began to breathe life into the clarinet.

The sound brightened, she opened her
eyes in delight. She was playing the sunrise!
She was playing the color of her hair.

Once she stopped trying so hard and
struggling with it, she discovered the
wonder and beauty exactly in the moment
she let go of it being so hard.

She needed to let the best of herself, her
red, sunrise filled hair, to shine through the
notes she played on her Clarinet.

Once she did that, she was able to feel
the exquisiteness of peace. It was through
that peace she was able to not only play
the notes, she was able to feel the
beauty within the notes.  All of a sudden,
that was all that showed up.

Beauty. Peace. Loving Presence.

Gertrude just being Gertrude, just expressing
the beauty of Gertrude and everything else
became coated with infinite, loving peace.

Just like Arizona was simply being Arizona
and Sam and I were filled with its exquiste
presence.

Today you can do exactly the same thing
with the words you write.

Prepare to Write:

Answer in your mind-heart now, without thinking.

What is it you like the most about yourself?

Hold that response.

Breathe it into your heartspace.

What is it about that trait that brings you the
most joy? The most peace?

Perhaps your eyes like the ocean, deep and
vast – they are the bearers of life and mystery.

Is your sense of humor like a blanket, which
covers everyone it touches with warmth,
laughter and happiness?

Name your trait.

Name what it is like.

And then write it……

I like my __________ and it is like ___________ …
and then allow your words to continue to flow – sharing
what the “sunrise” looks like or what it evokes in
you or how it touches others or whatever comes
forward to surprise and delight you……

I like my __________ and it is like ___________ …

I like my __________ and it is like ___________ …

Further Integration:

Pay attention today to what you admire in yourself
and what makes you delight in that specific trait.
Allow yourself to fully experience the wonder of
you simply being you.  Hold those observations
in words which you can review whenever you
need a bolt of acknowledgement.

I am very excited to get started in this program
alongside you as each facilitator inspires,
encourages and provides an atmosphere to
nourish, applaud, energize and activate the writing
muse that is in each individual and thrives in the
group setting for 42 consecutive days which will,
in turn, cause a tangible, remarkable, miraculous
shift for each participant.

Tools for You To Use:

A journey of this sort is best started on a
solid foundation, one of strong intent and with
the right tools - tools which will support the
growth that wants to take place.

our tools take several forms.

The physical tools I will ask you to use are
simple.
#1) A spiral notebook - something like a simple,
8 1/2 inch by 11 inch single subject notebook.
I prefer notebooks with 60 to 90 pages.  Large
enough to be substantial but not so huge that
they "bulk up and overpower" the rest of your stuff.

#2) An adequate number of readily available
pencils and pens.

This is when people often stop and say "Can't
I use my computer and keyboard?"

I do most of my writing on my keyboard AND for
this course, my request is you write the "old fashioned
way" (pencil or pen and paper) whenever possible.

Writing by hand actually slows down the writing process-
and this is a good thing!

Please try it out during our free flow writing
moments.  If it doesn't work for you - it is ok.
At least you gave it a try.

Our second type of tool is an energetic one -
I call them our Passion Points. We have ten of them,
based on our different specialty areas to study.

Passion Write Points: 1 - 10

Passion Write Point #1 - Authentic Emotion

I allow myself to be pure, raw and completely
myself as I give myself permission to grow
with each word I write.  I trust myself as a
writer and as a person.  I know my right readers
connect with my heart message no matter what
shape or direction my writing takes today.

Passion Write Point #2 - Sense of Sight

I expand my witness of the world through
my words. I see the ordinary as extraordinary
as I communicate with ease and grace.  My
eyes – my vision – the sights that I see and
describe with my words – open to the light.

Passion Write Point #3 - Sense of Sound

Word music dances in my mind and heart, lifting
my energy so that the words float effortlessly
to my hands, my pencil, my pen, the keyboard. 
I know my words contain chimes, drumbeats,
buzzing, popping and rhythm that brings me
profound contentment and peace when I allow
myself to listen.  Gratifying passion is
shared with all who hear my words.
